Apple TV+’s Wild Plane Crash Series Is a Must-See Thriller

Apple TV+’s Wild Plane Crash Series Is a Must-See Thriller

Landing on Apple TV+ on October 10, 2025, The Last Frontier is a riveting new airplane thriller with shades of Con Air and A Simple Plan. Led by Jason Clarke (Pet Sematary) as US Marshal Frank Remnick, the 10-part series concerns a widespread investigation in snowy Alaska following a crashed prison transport plane loaded with hyperviolent criminals. As Remnick races to find the survivors, the ferocious fugitives fan out and threaten the local population.

A throwback thriller that evokes the kinds of movies made in the 1990s, The Last Frontier is sure to deliver high-flying thrills and grounded drama to keep Apple TV+ subscribers entertained. With the weather cooling, there’s no better time to bundle up and become transported to the chilly environs of the Alaska wilderness between now and December. Here’s everything to know about The Last Frontier

What Is ‘The Last Frontier About?’

From The Blacklist creators Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, The Last Frontier is an Apple TV+ original action drama with horror/thriller leanings. The high concept couldn’t be more straightforward: US Marshal Frank Remnick’s quiet, isolated life in rural Alaska is upended when a prison transport airplane crashes in his sole jurisdiction.

Upon crashing, several terrifying, ultra-violent convicts survive, flee the scene, and go on the run in the Alaska wilderness. Remnick, used to drama-free police work, is thrown into a chaotic maelstrom of mystery, manhunts, and murder as he tries to capture the cons and keep his sleepy town safe. As Remnick conducts a dogged manhunt in Alaska’s sprawling expanse during the winter, he must keep his family members safe, including his wife, Sarah Remnick (Simone Kessell), and their young son, Luke Remnick (Tait Blum).

In addition to the supremely talented Clarke, The Last Frontier boasts a stellar ensemble. The series co-stars Dominic Cooper (Preacher) as former Navy SEAL turned fugitive Levi Hartman, Haley Bennett (Swallow) as CIA operative Sidney Scofield, Clifton Collins Jr. (The Rules of Attraction) as Isaac Romero, and the great Alfre Woodard (Scrooged) as senior CIA analyst Jacque Bradford. Other cast members include Dallas Goldtooth (Reservation Dogs) as Deputy Marshal Hutch, Johnny Knoxville (Jackass) as Covington, Sarah Swire (Muroch Mysteries) as Inspector Jenna Briggs, Rusty Schwimmer (The Righteous Gemstones) as Katherine Van Horn, and Josh Cruddas (Billy the Kid) as Trooper Marks.

‘The Last Frontier’ Channels Classic ’90s Action/Crime Thrillers

Apple TV+

Reading the logline for The Last Frontier, those who grew up in the 1990s will undoubtedly draw parallels to Con Air, an absurdly ludicrous yet wildly entertaining Nicolas Cage action movie released in 1997. Directed by Simon West as a bald Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer knock-off, Con Air saw Cage on a relentless revenge mission when wrongly boarded on an airplane full of the world’s deadliest convicts.

Hell-bent on avenging his daughter after her toy bunny is taken by the criminal leader, Cyrus the Virus (John Malkovich), Cage’s Cameron Po becomes a one-man wrecking crew as he disarms one terrifying serial killer after another while trying to divert and ground the plane safely. While most of the action occurs up in the air, The Last Frontier‘s premise goes one step beyond and imagines what it would be like if the cons fled into the wild and wreaked gory havoc.

Beyond Con Air‘s similar premise, The Last Frontier also evokes Sam Raimi’s criminally underrated 1998 film, A Simple Plan. Set in snowy Minnesota, A Simple Plan revolves around a plane crash carrying a large amount of drug money. Brothers Hank (Bill Paxton) and Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton), and their friend Lou (Brent Briscoe), find the stash of cash in the airplane and decide to keep it for themselves. Yet, when a crooked FBI agent (Gary Cole) comes looking for the loot, paranoia and distrust turn a simple plan into a complicated mess.

If The Last Frontier results in a riveting compendium of Con Air and A Simple Plan, Apple TV+ subscribers are in for a real treat this autumn. The sad truth is that today, Hollywood nowhere near resembles the industry it was in the 1990s. As its title suggests, The Last Frontier may refer to a dying breed of halcyon-day entertainment that marries a thrilling high concept with superb acting and spectacular storytelling. Regardless, the series promises a brand of entertainment that hardly exists anymore.

How & Where to Watch ‘The Last Frontier’

The first season of The Last Frontier consists of 10 episodes. The first two episodes, “Blue Skies” and “Winds of Change,” will air on Apple TV+ the same day, October 10th, 2025. After that, a new episode will be released every week, on Friday. Episode 3, “Country as F*ck,” will air on October 17th, so on and so forth.

It’s also worth noting the writing and directing talent behind The Last Frontier. The pilot, “Blue Skies,” was written by series creators Jon Bokemkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, and directed by longtime stunt performer Sam Hargrave (Extraction). Episode 2, “Winds of Change,” was penned by Melissa Glenn (Zoo) and newcomer Ryan Cruise and directed by John Curran (The Painted Veil). Hargrave returns to the director’s chair for Episode 3, “Country as F*ck,” which was written by Cruise and Akela Cooper (M3gan).

Episode 4 (October 24th), “My Autum’s Done Come,” was written by Kelli Johnson (another The Blacklist contributor) and directed by Curran. Episode 5 (October 31st), “Good Hearted Woman,” is also directed by Curran and scripted by Glenn Kessleer (Damages). Episode 6 (November 7th), “The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie,” was written by Melissa Glenn and directed by Jessica Lowery (Heels, Halo). Lowery also directs Episode 7 (November 14th), “Change of Time,” from a teleplay by Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow). Cruise and Curran return to write and direct Episode 8 (November 21st), “L’air Perdu.” Director Dennie Gordon (Warrior, Halo) lands the plane by helming the final two episodes. Albert Kim wrote Episode 9 (November 28th), “Converge,” while Bokemkamp and D’Ovidio penned the finale (December 10th), “Everything Trying.”

With such a strong cinematic and small-screen pedigree, The Last Frontier is in good creative hands that viewers should implicitly trust to stick a smooth landing. Between the talent involved in the exhilarating throwback conceit of the show, The Last Frontier promises to be the best new thriller to watch on Apple TV+ this autumn.
