‘Matlock’ Star’s Firing Sparks Strong Social Media Reactions

‘Matlock’ Star’s Firing Sparks Strong Social Media Reactions

Matlock star David Del Rio’s wife, Katherine, has spoken out after her husband was fired from the hit legal drama in connection with sexual assault allegations. It’s been reported that CBS investigated an alleged incident involving David’s costar Leah Lewis that is said to have occurred in her trailer on Sept. 26. Following the investigation, David, 38, was officially let go and was “escorted off the Paramount lot” by executive producer Eric Christian Olsen “the same day the alleged assault was reported”, according to Deadline.

On Thursday, Oct. 9, Leah, 28, took to her Instagram Stories to share a picture of herself with her mother. She captioned the snapshot, “Mom is here, we’re moving forward in love and strength. I’m in good hands. Thank you to everybody for any kind of support and care. Truly, we’re moving forward in strength. Key word, strength. Please, let that be the take away.”

That same day, Katherine posted a close-up photo of Leah’s face to her own Instagram Story. Across the image, she reportedly wrote: “This is the most disturbing human being I have ever met.” The social media post has since been deleted and Katherine and Leah are no longer following each other on Instagram, per Us Weekly.

Matlock producers have yet to make an official statement on the situation and David has not spoken out publicly about his firing.

‘Matlock’ Will Resume Filming After Hiatus

Matlock‘s premiere season debuted in September 2024 and is a reboot of the classic ’80s legal drama of the same name. The original series was created by Dean Hargrove and starred Andy Griffith. Prior to the alleged incident, David played the role of associate lawyer Billy Martinez at the New York law firm Jacobson Moore, where he worked closely with fellow associate Sarah Franklin (Lewis). Both characters were members of Madeline “Matty” Matlock’s (Kathy Bates) team and shared many scenes together throughout the first season.

It’s been reported that the show will be going on a pre-planned hiatus starting on Oct. 13, and will continue filming Season 2 shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday. David’s character will be written off the series, and scripts that have already been finished will be reworked to remove his arc as production resumes. It is unclear if the writers have a plan for how that will happen yet.

As for what’s to come for Sarah in Season 2, show creator Jennie Snyder Urman told People earlier this year that the character will be “growing in confidence” despite ups and downs in her law career that are to come.

“She did something great in court and she is going to feel that for a while and then Simone (Andrea Londo) definitely comes and pops the balloon, but Sarah’s not going to take that lying down. She is protective of her job, her place on the team and she’s got some tricks up her sleeve.”

The Season 2 premiere of Matlock titled “The Before Times”, will air on Sunday, Oct. 12, on CBS.
