Wicked has finally arrived in theaters, and the first of the two-part film has some surprises lined up for fans. The film successfully adapts the iconic musical, and the stellar cast ensemble gives incredible performances. The chemistry between Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda was reminiscent of Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth’s performances as the original Elphaba and Glinda in the 2003 Broadway production. Erivo and Grande made the beloved roles their own while honoring the legacy of Menzel and Chenoweth. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film, as many fans have noticed, pays homage to the original creator of the 2003 musical. Chu enlisted the brilliant mind of Winnie Holzman, the writer for the 2003 production, for the screenplay for the two-part adaptation. Aside from the cast performances, the music resonated with fans of the original production and set it apart from other musical productions. Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist for the musical, returned to participate in the legacy project in a special appearance. Chu ensured the film would capture the magical essence of the Broadway show through the surprise cameos of Holzman, Menzel, Chenoweth, and Schwartz.
Bridging the Gap Between Broadway and Film with ‘Wicked’
Wicked fans received their Christmas presents early with the surprise appearances Chu had in store in the film. The biggest and most exciting cameos were Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the original Elphaba and Glinda, who reunited to pass the torch to the next generation of actresses playing the iconic characters. The pair appear during the scene where Elphaba and Glinda arrive at the Emerald City to see the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and perform “One Short Day” before interacting with Erivo’s Elphaba and Grande’s Glinda. Their vocals teleport fans back to 2003, when the duo first appeared as the cherished witches.
The lead singers weren’t the only people from the original production to make a special appearance during the scene. Winnie Holzman, the original playwright, and Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist for the musical, made a cameo as citizens in the Emerald City and witnessed the interaction between Menzel, Chenoweth, Erivo, and Grande. These guest appearances were a wonderful tribute on Chu’s behalf to the original cast and crew and the history of the Broadway musical that fans have come to know and love endlessly.
The Original ‘Wicked’ Cast Doesn’t Take Away From the New Cast
Having Menzel and Chenoweth return for the film adaptation of Wicked was a touching addition on Chu’s part, as it shows he respects the enduring legacy of the musical and the leading ladies that made it everything it is today. Their appearance was the perfect amount of homage, and they blended seamlessly into the story without drawing attention away from Erivo and Grande’s performances as the new Elphaba and Glinda. Menzel and Chenoweth’s presence could’ve easily overpowered the new leading actresses had they been other people, but Erivo and Grande managed to make these roles their own while simultaneously honoring the work the original cast poured into their performances.

It was also a full-circle moment for Grande as she met Chenoweth when she was 10 years old, attending her first showing of Wicked. In several interviews, Chenoweth has revealed that Grande has always had her blessing as the new Glinda and has always supported her career and vice versa. Grande has also been vocal about what this role has meant to her and how she poured her heart and soul into obtaining this life-changing role. With their real-life history in mind, their interaction on screen is given a whole new emotional layer and affirms the care poured into this project to continue the legacy of the Broadway production.
What Other Surprises Could Fans See in ‘Wicked: Part 2?’
The first half of Chu’s directorial vision has been a success, with fans of the original production and newcomer fans learning about Wicked for the first time. Fans are eagerly awaiting the second part of Wicked to see what other surprise appearances could make their way onto the big screen. Fans can expect more magical musical numbers as well as more emotionally driven performances from Erivo and Grande. Characters from The Wizard of Oz, the classic of all classics, might also make an appearance as the storylines from Wicked and the 1939 film intertwine when Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, The Good Witch, reunite on Dorothy Gale’s journey to find the Wizard and return home.

While Chu has his lips sealed on the specifics of Wicked: Part Two, he has hinted that Dorothy has an important role in the film. There could also be other surprise cameos from the 2003 cast, like Norbert Leo Butz, who played the original Fiyero, or Christopher Fitzgerald, who played the original Boq. Chu might also decide to lean into the sociopolitical aspects of the story, as the first part barely scratched the surface of the political issues the original story addresses. One thing is certain: fans will see an epic conclusion in Wicked. Wicked is in theaters now.
