‘Kraven the Hunter’ Opening Weekend Projections No Better Than ‘Morbius’ & ‘Madame Web’

Kraven the Hunter director J.C. Chandor has recently begged fans to forget about the previous struggles of Sony to deliver their Marvel movies, and to give this December’s release a chance to live or die on its own merits. It seems that so far those pleas are falling on deaf ears, as the first projections for the film’s opening weekend in two weeks’ time are worrying, to say the least. According to figures from Box Office Pro, the Aaron Taylor-Johnson movie will land a $20-25 million domestic opening, which puts it below the $39 million taken by Morbius and incredibly close to the dismal six-day opening of Madame Web in the same ballpark.

While Venom: The Last Dance proved to be another success for the Tom Hardy franchise, even if its $51 million opening was substantially less than the previous installments, it seems that the good will of audiences isn’t extending to the next offering from the branch of Marvel that just cannot catch a break. After several delays, and plenty of positive press being pushed by Sony for the film’s eventual arrival in cinemas, it seems that all of it could be in vain, and Kraven is destined to join the ever-growing disappointments of the Sony Spider-Man Universe.

Of course, these things are never set in stone. If Kraven the Hunter can manage to break the review barrier, and deliver a strong word of mouth after its opening, then there could be a Christmas miracle on the cards. We can just wait and see how that turns out.

What is Happening with Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Next?

The Sony Spider-Man Universe was supposed to be another popular and lucrative arm of the Marvel Comics universe, with several characters from the pages of Spider-Man comics getting their chance to shine on the big screen. However, while the Venom movies – arguably the best known of the webbed-wonder’s villains featured – have performed well, Morbius and Madame Web have…let’s say, not.

While there were originally several other movies in development, and clearly a crossover plan in place since Morbius met up with the MCU’s Vulture in a fumbling post-credits scene, those plans are now uncertain. Venom: The Last Dance has opened up a new avenue for the franchise, with Knull now appearing from nowhere to apparently be the future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Or maybe, it is part of the MCU’s future. It is sometimes hard to tell what is going on there.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s savage role in Kraven the Hunter is revealed in the new images and footage from New York Comic Con.

Certainty is not the name of the game in Hollywood right now, and the next movie Sony puts out using its roster of Spider-Man characters is probably one of the least certain of them all. Whatever is to come, it seems that Kraven the Hunter’s box office is not going to suddenly change any minds in the financing department.
