The last few days have seen small snippets of wrap gifts from Avengers: Doomsday, with principal photography on the upcoming MCU movie having ended for now. Among the artwork and other merchandise images, a video emerged on Sunday that was seemingly recorded at the wrap party for the movie, and it featured the first video appearance of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom – but not one that anyone really wants to see again.
A clip from the film’s wrap party, shared by various Marvel fan accounts, features a crowded room of people, pulsing lights, and some shaky camera work. However, at the center of the video is a holographic display featuring Doctor Doom that is not one anyone is going to see in the upcoming MCU Avengers film – that of Doom pulling some cringeworthy dance moves. Naturally, the video has gone viral, and attracted plenty of comments in the process. Some have found it just a bit of fun – exactly what it was clearly meant to be – while others once again have hailed the death of the MCU.
It is easy for context to play second fiddle in the world today, but adding a little of that to the viral video, it is clear that this was meant to be nothing more than a party gag for those who were celebrating the end of the first round of filming. It is not any kind of story reveal, or even meant to be seen by the public, but here we are. Doom is clearly not about to dance his way to the destruction of the MCU as we know it in next December’s movie, although it is almost certain that we will at some point be treated to a suspiciously AI-looking “set video” of him doing exactly that.
Is Doctor Doom About to Become a Huge Hit With MCU Fans?
Marvel Studios did one of the worst things possible with the Infinity Saga; they opened the MCU with an almost flawless interconnecting set of movies that culminated in the biggest superhero movie ever made and featured one of the biggest and baddest Marvel villains seen on screen in Thanos. This left them with a big problem when it became clear that the story of the same characters was going to continue beyond Avengers: Endgame and into a brand new saga. They needed a new “big bad” villain for their Multiverse Saga, and that seemed to be Kang the Conqueror.
Just a few years into the Multiverse Saga, Kang’s appearance in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantimania was a massive disappointment for many fans, and subsequent personal legal issues with Kang actor Jonathan Majors saw the actor removed from the franchise and Kang being sidelined. Following this, the proposed Avengers movie subtitled The Kang Dynasty pivoted to become Doomsday, and Robert Downey Jr. was announced to be taking on the role of Doctor Doom, effectively replacing Kang as the Multiverse Saga’s major villain.
Although many people online are not quite on board with Downey Jr. being the choice to play Doom, or even the way the Multiverse Saga has been panning out, it is hard to imagine Avengers: Doomsday being anything other than a massive hit when it debuts in cinemas in December 2026. Similarly, if Downey Jr.’s Doom is well written and performed by the actor at his best, then there is no reason why Doom cannot be every bit as popular as Thanos. Just don’t expect him to start throwing shapes on the dancefloor when the movie comes around.
