‘The Conjuring’ Is Over but Another Iconic Horror Franchise Sets New Sequel for August 2026

‘The Conjuring’ Is Over but Another Iconic Horror Franchise Sets New Sequel for August 2026

The Conjuring might be concluded, but another Patrick Wilson-led horror franchise from James Wan will continue. Before The Conjuring, there was Insidious, which, despite being a PG-13-rated horror film, managed to scare the hell out of many audiences and become a box office hit spanning a rather long and lucrative franchise. The series includes 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, 2015’s Insidious: Chapter 3, 2018’s Insidious: The Last Key, and the most recent entry, 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has slated Insidious 6 for an Aug. 21, 2026, release date. The film will star franchise veterant Lin Shaye and Amelia Eve. Shaye has appeared in every entry of the Insidious films as Elise Reynor and has become the face of the franchise, even being the lead character in Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key. Amelia Eve is new to the franchise and is best known for her role in The Haunting of Bly Manor. Jacob Chase is set to direct, with Chase also serving as the film’s co-writer alongside David Leslie Johnson.

The news of Insidious 6 is not surprising, as Insidious: The Red Door became the highest-grossing film in the franchise with $82 million domestically and $189 million worldwide. The sixth film was originally announced in May 2024 with a planned release date of Aug. 29, 2025, before being removed from Sony’s schedule earlier in 2025. Meanwhile, there is still no word on the spin-off film, Thread, which is set to be directed by Jeremy Slater and stars Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani. Thread: An Insidious Tale has not received an update since 2023.

Currently, Insidious 6 is the only film dated for Aug. 21, 2026. It will open one week after the sci-fi film Flowervale Street starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, and one week before the long-awaited release of Coyote vs. Acme. August 2026 appears to be a bit light in terms of major movies, but this will likely fill up in the coming months as more films are announced and pushed back.

Sony’s decision to release Insidious 6 for a late summer release date is smart. It has a chance to play in a similar theatrical window that Weapons did earlier this year with an impressive box office run. Insidious: The Red Door‘s early July 2023 release date paid off. It also gives the film a three-week lead on Clayface, which will both expand the DCU Bros. and continue the studio’s track record of releasing high-profile horror films in the first weekend after Labor Day to kick off the fall season. Yet similar to The Conjuring, the audience for Insidious might also be growing, and the series could not only look at its own franchise’s best opening weekend but also another potential massive opening in the horror genre.
