Henry Cavill may still be strongly associated with his time in the DCEU, as “everyone’s” favorite Superman, but he is quickly becoming part of an unexpected MCU reunion with his upcoming fantasy action remake of Highlander. After recently adding Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan, another former Guardians of the Galaxy star has now joined the growing cast, and it also sets up another reunion of historical proportions.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the incredible Djimon Hounsou is the latest actor to board the highly-anticipated movie from John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski. Hounsou, who has two Oscar nominations to his name, has previously been part of Ridley Scott’s epic Gladiator, and Zack Snyder’s Netflix Star Wars rip, Rebel Moon, among many other films, and he already has several other movies on his slate. His inclusion in the movie not only reunites him with his MCU castmates Gillan and Bautista, but also sets up his first time working with Russell Crowe since 2000’s Gladiator.
The new take on the 1986 cult classic, which starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, will see Cavill taking over Lambert’s role as immortal Connor MacLoed, while Crowe will be playing Connery’s role of MacLoed’s mentor, Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez. Gillan is playing MacLoed’s mortal wife, while Bautista is set to appear as the movie’s villain, Kurgan, another immortal bent on claiming “the prize” by defeating all other immortals in his path.
Hounsou’s role has not yet been revealed, but in the original movie MacLoed is friends with an African immortal, which could be the role the actor will be playing.
‘Highlander’ is One of Henry Cavill’s Highly Anticipated ‘Witcher’ Replacements
Since stepping away from playing Superman and also dropping out of Netflix’s The Witcher, Henry Cavill has been building himself a future that is littered with fantasy projects that will fill that gap for fans. While he is still hoping to bring Warhammer 40K to Prime Video, and has also added a Voltron live-action movie to his roster, Highlander is one of his most anticipated upcoming movies.
It is impossible to deny that Cavill’s fanbase is dedicated to anything and everything the actor puts out, and while there are still plenty of calls online for him to be allowed to return as both Superman and Geralt, most people have realized this is not going to happen, and they just need to look to his next projects for their next fix.
With Highlander, the casting has thrown up plenty of nostalgic reunions for both fans and the cast themselves. As well as the mini Guardians of the Galaxy reunion, and that of Houson and Crowe, Cavill and Crowe also worked together on Snyder’s Man of Steel, with the latter playing Jor-El to Cavill’s Kal-El. Highlander has yet to receive a release date.
