40 days ago, the bombshell exclusive arrived from Craig Hope on Alexander Isak, claiming Newcastle United’s previously adored No. 14 wanted out.
A month later, his actions have been appalling, his legacy is ruined and his legendary status well and truly in the bin.
Can I understand why he may have fancied a move to Liverpool? Yes. However, there is a way of going about things, and his approach towards this proposed transfer has stunk all summer long, not only impacting our pre-season preparations but also the start of the season.
He’s let down the club that paid a club-record fee to sign him after a six-goal season in his last year at Real Sociedad, disrespected the manager massively responsible for his rise, binned off his teammates and sacked off the fans who worshipped him for his own selfish gains.
Alexander Isak is an excellent footballer who has now got his wish, but his character will forever be questioned by the way he’s handled a saga that’s spoilt what could’ve been a big summer on Tyneside.
When you consider how Ebere Eze and Marc Guehi have acted in the build up to proposed moves over the past month, it shows you everything you need to know.
Where Isak threw his toys out of the pram, refused to train, released inflammatory statements (only to save face on the PFA awards night, not to apologise) and left his team, manager and fans in the lurch, Eze and Guehi gave their all until the end.
The Swede has scored 62 goals for us in 109 appearances, helped us win a trophy and been part of some memorable days, be it wins at St James’ Park, Wembley scenes or that Carabao Cup parade on the Town Moor.
However, after 40 days of undoing all the good work he once did, his legacy is tarnished, he’ll now be booed on his return and never hold that legendary status he could’ve enjoyed had he just returned some of the loyalty we’ve shown him over the past three years; which have been comfortably the best of his career so far.
Alexander the great? Not anymore.
