World War Z, the blockbuster 2013 zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt, has landed a new streaming home. Shortly after fresh news of a sequel in the works, the film is now set to be added to Hulu‘s library as part of the platform’s September update. Starting September 1, subscribers will be able to add Pitt’s post-apocalyptic zombie thriller to their queues (the Spanish-dubbed version is also being made available).
The film follows a modern zombie apocalypse that suddenly puts the world in its undead grip. Gerry Lane (Pitt) is a family man who’s recruited to find a cure for the infection, which forces him to leave his wife and children in the care of the authorities as he travels across the globe to try to understand the crisis and find a solution. Per the Rotten Tomatoes synopsis:
When former U.N. investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) and his family get stuck in urban gridlock, he senses that it’s no ordinary traffic jam. His suspicions are confirmed when, suddenly, the city erupts into chaos. A lethal virus, spread through a single bite, is turning healthy people into something vicious, unthinking and feral. As the pandemic threatens to consume humanity, Gerry leads a worldwide search to find the source of the infection and, with luck, a way to halt its spread.
The film is based on Max Brooks’ book of the same name, from a story by Matthew Michael Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski. It was co-written by Carnahan, Drew Goddard, and Damon Lindelof, and directed by Marc Forster, also known for his work in Monster’s Ball and A Man Called Otto. It stars Pitt alongside Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, Peter Capaldi, Ruth Negga, Daniella Kertesz, David Morse, and Fana Mokoena, among others.
Upon release, World War Z was a huge hit, grossing $540 million against its massive $269 million production budget. While it’s certainly remained popular over the years, critics weren’t as impressed; the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score remains at 67%. The audience score is a bit higher, at 72%.
Other movies set to be added to Hulu in September include Donnie Darko, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, John Tucker Must Die, and School of Rock.
‘World War Z’ Always Had Sequel Potential – Why Did It Take So Long?
The film is only loosely inspired by Max Brooks’ book, which is a good thing for franchise potential, because while the source material doesn’t really leave the doors wide open for a sequel, the movie does. After its successful box office run, producers gave the green light for a follow-up, but several attempts failed to come to fruition. Directors David Fincher and J.A. Bayona were attached to the project at various points, but the project was ultimately canceled by Paramount Pictures.
Talk of a World War Z sequel remained dormant until a few days ago, when rumors started appearing online that Paramount was interested in pursuing it again. This comes after the company was acquired by the Skydance Media group, a merger that has led to some projects being reconsidered. It appears that World War Z 2 is not only a possibility, but a priority for the company. Josh Greenstein, one of the heads at Paramount, is apparently a big fan of the original.
