Supernatural Showrunner Reveals Scrapped Storyline Involving Sam And Dean Going Public

A Supernatural showrunner reveals a major storyline that was scrapped. Supernatural focused on Sam and Dean Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who were two brothers that hunted monsters. A truly beloved show, dedicated viewers watched Supernatural‘s 15 seasons that aired between 2005 and 2020.

Even though Supernatural’s ending originally aired five years ago, many of its viewers love it as much as ever. Some of those Supernatural fans still wonder about what could have been for the show that earned a 93% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. For that reason, it is fascinating to learn what has just been revealed about a scrapped Supernatural storyline.

TVinsider interviewed Supernatural’s final showrunner, Andrew Dabb, for TV Guide Magazine’s Supernatural Afterlife: 20th Anniversary Special issue. During that conversation, Dabb spoke about what he would have liked to have seen on the show. He then described a major Supernatural storyline he considered, but scrapped. Check out his comments below:

One storyline we always talked about, which we never did was basically Sam and Dean go public. They’re like, “Look, we’re putting out a PSA. Monsters are real. If you see something, something shows up in your town, it’s a monster. We can’t be everywhere. We’re just going to get the word out there.”

Dabb then explained that he never had the Winchester brothers reveal the truth to the world because it would have profoundly changed the show. Still, he stated that he continued to think the storyline idea had merit. Dabb reiterated his opinion that the storyline would have ruined Supernatural.

It would’ve kind of blown up the show in a very odd way. But that was always something I was like, ‘They probably should do that, you know what I mean? Just share some information, share it around.’ But again, a little logistically difficult for the show.

Suddenly, Sam and Dean are known worldwide, which, again, I think sounds interesting in theory, but I actually think would’ve destroyed the show. It would not have been any good, which is one of the reasons we didn’t do it.

What This Means For Supernatural Fans

Learning that a storyline that would have fundamentally changed Supernatural was considered by the series’ former showrunner is thought-provoking. It truly is impossible to know what would have happened if the storyline had been introduced, and it is fascinating to consider what would happen if Supernatural got a revival that introduced this storyline.

Dabb is arguably correct that the storyline could have ruined the original show. There are many examples of shows and spinoffs that quickly flopped after dramatically changing what previously worked. For example, Prison Break was never as good after the main characters got out and Baywatch Nights had incredibly poor ratings.

Still, Supernatural got great reviews because viewers loved the duo at the show’s core. As a result, Supernatural may have survived a major plot change as long as viewers still loved the Winchester brothers. It is even possible that the Winchesters publicly revealing their world was overrun with monsters could have improved Supernatural and make it last longer.

After learning about the scrapped Supernatural storyline, two things immediately come to mind. First off, even though it was easy to suspend disbelief, Supernatural’s characters maintaining secrecy never made a lot of sense. Even if the characters could keep the public ignorant, the idea that the government had no idea what was going on seemed ridiculous.

Secondly, I have to ask why Supernatural couldn’t have gone halfway with the proposed storyline. Instead of the Winchesters telling the public, they could have just revealed the truth to the government. It seems like that wouldn’t have ruined the show as fans knew it while still opening up a lot of the storyline possibilities that Dabb was interested in.
