Earlier this afternoon, news arrived on Newcastle United’s improved offer for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.
As revealed by Ben Jacobs, Keith Downie and Fabrizio Romano, the bid was worth £40m, made up of £35m plus an additional £5m in add-ons.
However, as many feared, Brentford’s response has not been a positive one, with the Bees rejecting our offer on Wednesday afternoon.
In an exclusive for The Athletic, David Ornstein reports that the rejected bid was £35m plus £5m in “difficult-to-achieve add-ons”, suggesting Brentford were by no means guaranteed to receive the full £40m.
Ornstein also adds an intriguing line from sources close to the West London, stating: ‘Brentford sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to discuss the situation, have stressed that the club have not provided a target price to any team.’
This comes after media reports stated earlier this week that Brentford were demanding £50-£60m for the 28-year-old. But it seems the Bees have moved to deny these claims.
So, what happens next? Do Newcastle bid again after resuming talks and go higher for a player who is turning 29 soon and heading to AFCON later this year?
I have a feeling this may have been our final bid before we move on, but we’ll soon see if there is room for a compromise to be reached or an alternative in mind, with time running out for Newcastle to sign a Callum Wilson replacement, never mind two forwards to sanction Alexander Isak’s sale.
