The truth of how Liverpool funded their success

The truth of how Liverpool funded their success

I realise that some Newcastle United fans might see this as something that doesn’t have a place on an NUFC site.

However, it is my belief that some of the bias and twisted info that you can face as a football fan, needs to be countered with knowledge.

For that reason, I will here present a counter to the Liverpool fans who think their success was built on “Good management”, “The organic right way.”

I came across this from a Liverpool fan commenting on a YouTube video; “In the 70s Liverpool started in the same place as all clubs. the fact that they earned the right to spend the way they do was hard work and good management. Oil rich owners don’t have that right…..do your research first mate.”

I find that astounding.

This guy is actually telling the creator of the video to “Do your research” and yet he doesn’t even know Liverpool FC’s own history.

I love to find little nuggets like this and put them in their place, by actually knowing more about their own club than they do.

You might think “Why bother trying to win the internet battle” but it’s not about that, as I said earlier, its about changing the narrative as much as we can, and hope it spills over to the general media.

So what was it this guy got so wrong?

Well back in 1963 when the league was 75 years old, Newcastle United had double the amount of trophies Liverpool had.

We were not alone, clubs such as Villa, Everton and dare I say it Sunderland all had more trophies than Liverpool back then.

In fact, six of our trophies were FA cups, and remember that back then that was considered the superior trophy to the League.

Liverpool though though utilised the financial backing of Littlewoods and first John Moores and later Eric Sawyer, who spent what in today’s terms would be translated to £230million to get out of the old 2nd division and challenge in the 1st division and they won their first FA cup in 1965.

Imagine a team in the Championship this season spending £230million? The outrage that would create.

Nothing organic about Liverpool’s success whatsoever.

It was paid for with big money and it paved the way for Shankly to get the team needed to compete.

Turn the time forward to present times and all this has been forgotten, and Liverpool are now a “Legacy club.”

The rules have changed so that the exact thing that team like Liverpool, Woolwich Arsenal and Newton Heath (Man Utd) have built their success on, are now being classed as illegal, keeping the fat cats at the top, licking all the cream.

I like to see Eddie Howe as our very own Bill Shankly in this case. He is clearly a talented coach. Imagine what he could do with that kind of financial backing? If sustained over a 12 year period like the financial backing Shankly got, what could Howe achieve?
