Barcelona were recently rocked by the news of Inigo Martinez’s imminent departure to Saudi Arabia.
The veteran defender, who was the backbone of Barcelona’s defence last season, is set to join Al Nassr on a free transfer. The player has already bid adieu to his Barcelona teammates ahead of the move to the Middle East.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Barcelona are open to signing a new centre-back, though they ideally prefer to work with the options that they already have.
Hansi Flick wants a versatile defender
According to SPORT, Hansi Flick hasn’t ruled out the possibility of bringing in a new defender, but only if the club’s financial situation allows it.
While the club had initially considered their squad complete, Martínez’s unexpected exit has altered their plans.
Flick had originally requested a winger and a top-class goalkeeper, both of which were fulfilled early in the window.
However, he had also flagged the need to strengthen the full-back positions – an area where Barça still lack depth.
Barcelona had explored signing players like Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo, but were priced out.
Now, the focus is on finding someone who can operate both as a centre-back and a full-back. Gerard Martin, naturally a full-back, was even tested at left centre-back during pre-season.
For now, though, Barcelona’s priority will be to register the new signings Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford, as well as Wojciech Szczesny, before the season starts.
The report even adds that only if they return to La Liga’s 1:1 rule will a new signing become viable, so Barcelona certainly have a long way to go before they can eye defensive reinforcements.
