Actor Who Played Iconic ‘Avengers’ Villain Talks Potential ‘Doomsday’ Return

Josh Brolin isn’t opposed to returning as Thanos in Avengers: Doomsday. He was, of course, the main villain in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — films that both grossed $2 billion at the worldwide box office while making Thanos one of the most famous cinematic villains of all time, up there with Darth Vader and Voldemort, all names that are shorthand for evil. It’s been hard for the MCU to fill those shoes; after failing with Kang the Conqueror, Marvel hopes Doctor Doom is up to the task in Avengers: Doomsday.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz via Comic Book Movie, Brolin spoke about the possibility of returning as Thanos. He said he maintains close contact with the Russo brothers and star Robert Downey Jr., which theoretically opens up the door for his return. While currently not part of the main cast, Brolin said he wouldn’t hesitate if asked, explaining:

“If they [The Russo brothers] called me in London right now, and said, ‘Let’s do this,’ I’d be like, ‘I’ll be there tomorrow,’ I talk to Downey probably four to six times a year. I talk to the Russos probably four to six times a week. I talk to Joe a lot. I love both of them. Of course, they’re going to come up with something fun. Who knows? That was a 10-year in-the-building kind of thing, and that was its own bookended deal. I don’t know what they’re going to do, but I’m sure it will be interesting. I think they do that very, very well.”

Could Thanos Return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Even though Thanos has died in the main MCU timeline, that hasn’t stopped the character from returning. The one in the climax of Avengers: Endgame is technically a variant of the one the heroes already defeated. A couple Thanos variants have also shown up in the animated anthology series What If…?, one who worked as a Ravager alongside T’Challa’s Star-Lord and another infected by the zombie virus that hopefully will pay off in Marvel Zombies. Brolin has already reprised his role for voice work, it’s obvious he hasn’t lost his affinity for playing Thanos.

Avengers: Doomsday is currently filming, with production expected to run until November 2025, although the film isn’t scheduled to arrive until December 2026. Unlike Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has been filming very publicly, security on Avengers: Doomsday is tight, and very little has been publicly revealed. So far, the only footage of the movie has come via the post-credit scenes of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, both scenes shot by the Russo brothers. Doctor Doom appears to be the main focus of that film, and the production likely won’t want to take attention away from him.

If Thanos doesn’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday, fans are hoping for a version of the character to show up in Avengers: Secret Wars — specifically to recreate one of the most iconic moments from the 2015 limited comic series, from Secret Wars #8, when God Emperor Doom rips out Thanos’ spine. If adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would be the ultimate meta-commentary on how the old villain of the MCU’s Infinity Saga is nothing against the franchise’s newest villain. A variant of Thanos could even appear on Battleworld, teaming up with the heroes to stop Doctor Doom and forcing the heroes of the MCU to join with their former greatest foe to battle an even greater villain.
