When Will ‘Overcompensating’ Be Renewed for Season 2?

Following its debut in May, sometimes it felt like you couldn’t go anywhere on the internet without seeing Prime Video’s new comedy Overcompensating mentioned. Praised by critics and viewers for its cringeworthy humor, the show almost feels like a time capsule for the late 2010s. But that’s not the only aspect of the show that draws you in. Created by and starring comedian Benito Skinner, the eight-episode series follows a closeted young man named Benny Scanlon, who starts attending Yates University. Now a college freshman, the former high school football player and homecoming king soon becomes friends with Carmen, a fellow freshman who is trying to find herself following the death of her brother. As he struggles to keep his sexuality a secret, Benny starts “overcompensating” out of fear of being exposed. From this rich premise, what audiences love most about Overcompensating is its ability to explore timeless themes like self-acceptance, friendship and sexuality.

Aside from its pop culture references and laugh-out-loud puns, Gen-Z and millennial viewers have praised Overcompensating for its relatability, diverse cast and humorous way of storytelling. But it’s not just viewers who can’t seem to get enough of the series: critics have been loving the show, too. Rotten Tomatoes-approved critics gave Overcompensating a near-perfect 93% rating on the Tomatometer, and even now, the comedy series continues to attract viewers. Recently, fans noticed that Overcompensating re-entered Prime Video’s Top TV Shows list, showing that love for the show persists. Sitting at the number nine spot, the show joins the ranking alongside The Summer I Turned Pretty, Reacher, Ballard, Countdown and We Were Liars (just to name a few). So why hasn’t Prime Video renewed Overcompensating for Season 2?

While we don’t have an answer yet, Overcompensating creator Benito Skinner has expressed interest in continuing the show. In June, Skinner spoke with E! News and shared his hopes for a Season 2. When asked if the show had been renewed, the actor and comedian answered, “No word yet. But I feel optimistic and I’m ready to go.” Since then, fans have been on their toes about the renewal of Overcompensating. With so many shows being axed these days despite having a pretty good fanbase and streaming numbers, no show is safe from entering the cancellation graveyard.

Amazon TV’s Boss Has Expressed Interest in ‘Overcompensating’ Season 2

So, where does Prime Video stand? Last month, Amazon MGM Studios TV chief Vernon Sanders sat down with Variety and shared that they were impressed with the show’s success. While talking about the future of We Were Liars and Motorheads, Sanders expressed his optimism for the continuation of Overcompensating, saying:

“We haven’t announced the renewal quite yet, but we’re excited by the results we’ve seen of that show, and we’ve been excited by what we’ve seen with Motorheads and Overcompensating, as well. Each show has a really passionate fanbase, and we’ve been really pleased by the completion rates of Motorheads and Overcompensating — so we’re going to be in conversations with all three. All three shows are working on Season 2 writers rooms, and we’ll hope to have renewal announcements soon on some, if not all, of those shows.

For now, our best advice is for fans to continue waiting and just be patient, because if that quote is any indication, there’s a strong chance that an Overcompensating Season 2 is right around the corner.
