Dominik Szoboszlai had debate raging over his place in the side after Florian Wirtz‘s arrival, but his pre-season showings have shown fans he’s not easily displaced from the XI.

Arne Slot has no shortage of elite options throughout his midfield and forward line, creating fresh competition and debate over who will fit into his strongest XI.

For some, it has seen Szoboszlai miss out, and for others he’s indispensable, with the latter a prominent talking point after his display against Athletic Club in the second match at Anfield.

He played deeper in midfield before shifting to right-back late on, highlighting the versatility that can be seen as both a curse and a blessing – for Slot it is firmly the latter.

After his 90-minute display, though, the No. 8 had fans underlining that he cannot be underestimated in the season ahead.

“Fans might be delighted watching the new signings but I was delighted seeing Szobo getting his best position 8 like Wijnaldum and Gravenberg before him, he maybe the new CM signing for us and he’s class.” – King MJ in TIA comments.

It has been a positive pre-season so far for Szoboszlai, who seems intent on eradicating any notion that he does not belong in Liverpool’s first-choice XI.

He does the grunt work in the middle of the pitch, and even in a friendly contest his effort levels were unwavering both in midfield and defence late on.

The deeper role asks more of him in possession but so far, as he did at the backend of last season, he has shown he can link the play ahead of him and cover his team on the break when required.

Liverpool relied heavily on his industry last season, and you expect it will be a similar tale this time around. It is not often headline-worthy, but successful teams are built on players like Szoboszlai.
