Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Dean Devlin in his feature directorial debut, the disaster movie in question is Geostorm, and finds Gerard Butler heading off into space to save the world after a bunch of satellites designed to stop the repercussions of climate change begin to malfunction. Geostorm is now available to stream on the free streaming platform Tubi, meaning that Gerard Butler fans can tune in and bask in the spectacularly stupid sci-fi outing without paying a dime. And you really should, because there’s nothing wrong with leaving your brain at the door sometimes.
Doesn’t Anyone Have Time for a Dumb Disaster Movie Anymore!?
Starring Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy García alongside Butler, Geostorm was hit hard by both critics and audiences alike upon release, landing scores of just 18% and 35%, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes. “Lacking impressive visuals, well-written characters, or involving drama, Geostorm aims for epic disaster-movie spectacle but ends up simply being a disaster of a movie,” the critics’ consensus reads.
While it’s impossible to argue with any of the criticisms leveled at Geostorm, there’s still a lot of enjoyment to be found in Butler’s reliable charisma and the film’s B-movie sensibilities. Invite some friends over, don’t overthink it, and you’ll no doubt find yourself laughing all the way through. Because, sometimes, the best comedy can be found in the most unexpected places.
While Geostorm 2 is unlikely to be high on Gerard Butler’s agenda, the popular actor does have several exciting projects in the pipeline. Butler recently reprized his role as Stoick the Vast in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake, and is also due to return to several of his best-known franchises, with several sequels in the works, including Greenland: Migration, Night Has Fallen, and Den of Thieves 3. Meanwhile, outside of franchise filmmaking, Butler is due to star in the sports comedy-drama All-Star Weekend, and In the Hand of Dante in which he’ll star as part of an ensemble cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, Al Pacino, John Malkovich, and Martin Scorsese.
