Thursday’s news that Alexander Isak is seeking to leave Newcastle United has sent shockwaves across the football world.
In a situation that many fears feared was coming after an already frustrating transfer window, the Swede has relayed to the club hierarchy his desire to “explore his options” elsewhere.
There’s still some way to go in the saga surrounding Isak, and whilst he’s still under contract with the club for another three years, many will feel that the player has now run his course with the club.
And a new bombshell insider report seems to hint that this was a situation that had been brewing for months behind the scenes…
The Mail’s Craig Hope, who first broke the news of Isak’s intention to leave, has revealed that things have been less than rosy for much of 2025 for both the club and player.
Despite being instrumental to our Carabao Cup success, including scoring the winning goal at Wembley, many began to notice a change in both the Swede’s form and mentality, with the striker previously ‘furious’ by Paul Mitchell’s to not hand him new improved contract terms.
Hope writes “After that (the cup final) however, his form tailed off, even if he continued to score and finished the campaign on 27 goals.”
“But when he pulled out of a key game at Arsenal on the penultimate weekend of the season citing muscle fatigue, there was a feeling among some that he was starting to check out.”
Hope adds that Isak trained on Monday but left the pitch after a few minutes and returned to the main building – and he’s not trained at all since. Injury issues or something more? It’s clearly more than just a knock!
It’s true that Isak’s time at Newcastle has sometimes been blighted by the occasional injury, particularly during his first two seasons, but even the most ardent supporter could see that there was a massive difference between how Isak was performing pre- and post-Carabao Cup final win.
There isn’t a footballer on the planet that hasn’t won the Champions League who doesn’t one day dream of winning it.
Alexander Isak perhaps rightfully feels that playing for a club on par with the PSGs, Real Madrids and Barcelonas of the world is where he is destined to be, and he’s certainly shown he has the form and skill set to justify those lofty ambitions.
But the questionable timing of this news does come across as suspicious. Most elite teams in Europe have locked down their striking options for next season: seemingly all but Liverpool, the club who have openly admired Isak in the past fortnight.
In spite of all of this information that’s come out today, Isak still has “nothing but respect and admiration for those with whom he works on daily basis, as well as supporters.”
But only time will tell if we’re truly at an impasse between the club and the player, and how ugly this situation could potentially get if Isak feels as though we’re refusing to sell him and are hindering his career in the process.
