Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made an outstanding stop during extra time and saved two penalties during a shootout as Germany survived playing for almost two hours with 10 players to beat France and book a semi-final against Spain in Zurich on Wednesday (20:00 BST).
Gotham’s Berger denied Amel Majri and Alice Sombath in the shootout, having produced a sensational moment by clawing a deflection via team-mate Janine Minge off the line during the first half of the added 30 minutes.
Germany made a nightmare start when hugely experienced defender Kathrin Hendrich conceded a penalty Les Bleues scored from and was sent off for pulling France captain Griedge Mbock Bathy’s hair inside the box in the 13th minute.

Grace Geyoro converted the ensuing spot kick but Chelsea’s Sjoeke Nusken headed in from Klara Buhl’s corner to draw the eight-time champions level 10 minutes later.
France goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin saved Nusken’s 69th-minute penalty and Les Bleues substitute Melvine Malard almost settled the contest in the 120th minute when the Manchester United forward hit the crossbar from distance.
Sara Dabritz was the only Germany player to err during the shootout by hitting the crossbar, while Berger used a set of diagrams stuck to a water bottle to assess where France’s players had directed their penalties in previous matches.
