One of the greatest RPGs of the decade is free on Xbox Game Pass, and I highly recommend playing it while it is still in the catalog. The subscription service for both console and PC is constantly changing, with new additions arriving every so often, while other titles that are available occasionally leave. As such, there is a continuous flow of games going through the service. The Xbox Game Pass additions in July, for example, include Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 + 4, Shadow Labyrinth, Mecha Break, and the highly anticipated soulslike Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.
On the other hand, however, the catalog has lost a few games in July, such as SteamWorld Dig and SteamWorld Dig 2. The rotation of titles within the subscription is large, so you should always be paying attention to certain games to ensure you play them before they leave. Even so, not every game is a GOTY contender like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, so it’s common for some titles to fly under the radar when added to Xbox Game Pass.
For The King 2 Is Free On Xbox Game Pass
The Title Was Added To The Catalog In 2024
One of these overlooked titles that is free for Xbox Game Pass subscribers is For The King 2, a tactical RPG heavily inspired by Dungeons and Dragons that was developed by IronOak Games and published by Curve Games. The title was added to the catalog at the same time as its console release, which happened back in December 2024. The game was originally released for PC in 2023.

Xbox Players Can Claim Four FREE Games Now Including Ubisoft’s Most Infamous 2024 Release
Xbox has revealed four free games and a game trial for a limited time for Xbox players, and one of them is a notorious 2024 Ubisoft game.
Currently, there have been no hints of the game leaving the Xbox Game Pass catalog any time soon, but given how surprising the subscription service’s rotation may be, there is a chance that it could be removed at the start of any month. It is worth noting that For The King 2 is available on both the console and PC versions of Xbox Game Pass.
Why You Should Play For The King 2
You Can Play This DnD-Inspired Game With Up To Three Other Friends
For The King 2 is a fun tactical RPG that makes you feel immersed in a lightweight version of a Dungeons and Dragons story. The campaign’s structure is relatively simple, as you need to fight your way through evil forces dispatched by the traitorous Queen Rosomon. The game blends elements of tabletop RPGs, such as turn-based actions, even when exploring the overworld, and the uncertainty of landing attacks based on your stats – somewhat like Baldur’s Gate 3 – with a roguelike title.

If You Love BG3’s Story, Stop Sleeping On This Underrated Xbox Game Pass RPG
Few RPGs have stories quite as rich as Baldur’s Gate 3, but one that rarely gets mentioned goes above and beyond in the narrative department.
This is because, at the start of every chapter, you can pick a new class in For The King 2. Furthermore, the map and equipment drops are randomized, so every playthrough can feel significantly different from the previous run. Moreover, the game allows you to play with up to four friends, making it feel like a true, even if condensed, DnD campaign. Each player can do different tasks, so you’re not bound to the party.
Even though the game isn’t too well evaluated on Metacritic when compared to other big RPG releases, with a measly 76 Metascore, I’ve had a spectacular time playing For The King 2 with my friends, and a lot of that is due to the leeway you are offered and how closely it resembles tabletop RPGs. Because of its cross-play, you can also play the game with friends on other platforms, should they not have access to Xbox Game Pass, for example.
