Resurrection’s Surprise Cameos Spell Trouble for the Killer

Resurrection’s Surprise Cameos Spell Trouble for the Killer

Prior to the debut of the Dexter sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, several actors from the original were confirmed to be reprising their roles in the new show. This includes David Zayas, who returns as Detective (now Captain) Angel Batista, James Remar as the ghost of Harry Morgan, and others who appeared in a coma hallucination in episode one.

But in Episode 3, there are two character cameos that were kept tightly under wraps until now. And fans couldn’t be more pleased to see the fan favorites return.

Who Are the Surprise Cameos in ‘Dexter: Resurrection’?

Showtime

Following his awakening from a 10-week coma, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is visited in the hospital by Angel. His old colleague and friend presses Dexter about Angela’s (Julia Jones) theory that he is the real Bay Harbor Butcher from Miami. It’s a theory Detective Maria LaGuerta (Luna Lauren Velez) expressed to Angel before her death, too. Dexter dodges the question, and before Angel can return for another chat, Dexter makes a run for it.

Angel finds a way to track Dexter down by asking Iron Lake acting police chief Teddy Reed (David Magidoff) to notify him if there’s any activity on the truck that was owned by Jim Lindsay, a.k.a. Dexter Morgan. One night, Angel receives a call that the car got a speeding ticket, and it’s in New York.

Angered that a man he once called a friend could be a vicious killer, especially knowing all the deaths of innocent people that were a byproduct of that, including Sergeant James Doakes (Erik King), Rita (Julie Benz), Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), and Maria, Angel isn’t going to let this one go. He needs answers.

We’ve Waited Years for This ‘Dexter’ Storyline, and We’re Finally Getting It in ‘Resurrection’

‘Dexter: Resurrection’ follows Dexter in New York as he meets new killers, but a case involving his son Harrison will play a huge role, too.

He’s so hellbent, in fact, on finding the truth, that Angel decides to take some time off so he can travel to New York and quietly investigate this. He heads to a local Miami bar in plainclothes, ready to enjoy a drink, when it’s revealed that he isn’t alone. In walks Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee) and Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington), proving that the two not only still work at Miami Metro, but they also all remain friends.

Now that Quinn’s return is officially confirmed, it could have major implications for the story. Why? Quinn was onto Dexter by Season 5, likely convinced he was at least a killer if not the Bay Harbor Butcher. But he eventually abandoned his investigation when his feelings for Debra got in the way, and Dexter went out of his way to help him. It’s likely Quinn will come back again and may play a bigger role if Angel reveals the truth.

Who Else Returns in the Show?

Fans knew ahead of time that several characters from the original were confirmed to be returning in Dexter: Resurrection, including many of Dexter’s former foes who have long since passed. The first two episodes of the series confirmed how. Throughout the episodes thus far, Remar guides Dexter along his journey as his inner angel. Harry tries to help Dexter through his decisions, often questioning Dexter’s riskier choices and reminding him about The Code, the dangers he’s putting himself in, and, most importantly, his obligation to help his son Harrison (Jack Alcott).

Killing off a main character is never an easy choice. Bringing them back is even riskier.

A hallucination sequence in the beginning, just before Dexter arises from his coma, involves three returning villains: John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell, a.k.a. Trinity Killer, Jimmy Smits as ADA Miguel Prado, and King as Sergeant James Doakes. All three remind Dexter of who he was, what he was doing, and oddly, the fact that he does have some goodness inside of him. It’s arguably the visions of them that help Dexter awaken from his coma and realize he still has work to do.

Another actor confirmed to appear in the series is Christian Camargo as Brian Moser, a.k.a. the Ice Truck Killer from Season 1 of the original. Camargo posted a TikTok showing him walking through an airport, arriving in New York, and standing by a costume that reflects the last outfit Moser wore before he was killed by Dexter. He hasn’t appeared yet, but it’s likely Brian could show up as a devil on Dexter’s shoulder prodding him to ignore his conscience (Harry) as he once did in the original series.

Who Else Could Appear?

The surprise cameos of Masuka and Quinn show that Dexter: Resurrection is paying full fan service and tying tightly to the original series. It also opens the door for other potential character cameos. Captain Tom Matthews (Geoff Pierson) was pivotal to the Bay Harbor Butcher case investigation. While he’s likely long retired, it’s possible he could return should he discover what Angel has found out, and if the Bay Harbor Butcher case is reopened. However, it’s more likely that a younger version of him will appear in Dexter: Original Sin.

There’s also Astor (Christina Robinson) and Cody (Preston Bailey), who would be young adults by now. As Harrison’s older stepsiblings and the kids who were raised by Dexter at the time when he was acting as the Bay Harbor Butcher, they would be devastated to learn the truth. They could be seeking vengeance for the death of their mother, blaming Dexter for what happened.

‘Dexter’ Is Finally Back & He’s Brought a Killer Rotten Tomatoes Score With Him

We can’t wait to see Michael C. Hall back in the driver’s seat tomorrow.

Jonah Mitchell (Brandon Eaton), Arthur Mitchell’s son, knew that there was a darkness to Dexter, and likely put two-and-two together that Dexter was the one who killed his father. With him and his family, including his sister Rebecca (Vanessa Marano) and mother Sally (Julia Campbell) in witness protection, he might not be seen again. It’s possible, however, that he could be an ally if he returned, wanting to protect the man who saved his family from their evil patriarch.

Lumen Pierce (Julia Stiles) from season five is arguably the only person alive who knows the full extent of what Dexter is capable of, seeing it with her own eyes, even helping him with kills. She left after going on her own vengeful killing spree, feeling as though she was satisfied with what she did and could not continue to live a life like that. But she could return to Dexter’s life in some way.

Finally, Jamie Batista (Aimee Garcia) is Angel’s younger sister who, for a time, babysat Harrison. If Angel was seeking information about Dexter’s nightly doings back then, perhaps wanting to know if there was anything suspicious about his home life, Jamie is someone who could help. With Angel being a key part of the story in Dexter: Resurrection, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Jamie have a cameo, too.
