According to a report from The Chronicle, Newcastle United have been keeping a close eye on Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini’s availability ahead of the January transfer window.
Newcastle failed in our attempt to bring in a new centre back in the summer, with the Marc Guehi saga lasting for several weeks before we eventually pulled out following talks with Crystal Palace and a number of unsuccessful bids.
Now, an alternative to the England international appears to be on our radar, with the impressive Italian one of the standout centre-backs in Serie A last season before a serious knee injury ruled him out of Euro 2024 and the opening months of the 2024/25 season.
The ball-playing 6ft 4′ defender is yet to feature this season, but he’s back in training and reports in Italy suggest he could return to Atalanta’s squad for this weekend’s meeting with Parma after five months on the sidelines.
Scalvini has shown huge potential in the last few years helping Atalanta to win the Europa League and making his debut for the Italian national team at just 18-years-old back in 2022.
Tottenham and Manchester United are also believed to be interested in the €45m-rated Italian , though neither side has made an offer as of yet as he nears his comeback to first-team football.
It may be an expensive deal to pull off given his contract still has four years left to run in Bergamo, but this could be our opportunity to pounce while his stock is slightly lower; especially if Guehi plans to stay put in January and push for a bidding war next summer.
