The U.S. men’s national team’s three-match summer window got underway in winning fashion.
Emma Hayes’ squad blanked the visiting Republic of Ireland 4-0 on Thursday thanks to four different players finding the back of the net. Avery Patterson and Sam Coffey doubled the USWNT’s lead before halftime ahead of insurance finishes from returnee Rose Lavelle and young attacker Alyssa Thompson.
It was a fast start for the Americans, who grabbed a 1-0 lead after 18 minutes. Lavelle delivered a cross into the box which was headed home by Patterson.
Coffey doubled the USWNT’s lead in first-half stoppage time, slotting home her second goal in consecutive international windows.
Lavelle marked her return with a clinical finish in the 53rd minute, making it 3-0 to the USWNT. It was the veteran midfielder’s first goal for her country since 2023.
Thompson had the final say in the scoreline, finishing off Lilly Reale’s pass after the hour mark.
Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey didn’t need to make a single save to register her clean sheet. Jordyn Bugg, Olivia Moultrie, and Yazmeen Ryan were among the six players to feature off of the bench while Chelsea defender Naomi Girma got the start as the only European-based club player in camp.
The USWNT’s busy window continues on Sunday against the Republic of Ireland at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
