Remake of ’80s Horror Classic and ‘Silent Hill’ Sequel Get Theatrical Release Dates

Remake of ’80s Horror Classic and ‘Silent Hill’ Sequel Get Theatrical Release Dates

Fans of the horror genre, we have some very good news for you. Two of the most anticipated projects in recent horror history have landed a release date. Not only will fans see Silent Night, Deadly Night and Return to Silent Hill soon, but they will do so in the comfort of a dark movie theater, surrounded by other horror buffs who also celebrate cult horror as a community.

As reported by Deadline, Cineverse, Bloody Disgusting and Iconic Events Releasing have teamed up to bring these major horror events to American audiences. First it will be the turn of Silent Night, Deadly Night, the remake of the horror classic that’ll have its premiere on the big screen on December 12. The film is directed by Mike P. Nelson (2021’s Wrong Turn), and it stars Halloween Ends star Rohan Campbell as Billy Chapman, the troubled young man who goes on a rampage. Details are still under wraps, but the original 1984 featured the following synopsis:

Little Billy witnesses his parents getting killed by Santa after being warned by his senile grandpa that Santa punishes those who are naughty. Now Billy is 18 and out of the orphanage, and he has just become Santa himself.

Return to Silent Hill: What We Hope to See in the Long-Awaited Sequel

This is what we hope to see in Return to Silent Hill, an appropriately-titled sequel to the beloved video game adaptation.

On the other hand, the long-awaited sequel Return to Silent Hill will land in theaters on January 23. Christophe Gans, director of the 2006 underrated adaptation of the video game, is directing the film, which will star Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson. Per Deadline’s synopsis:

It follows James (Irvine), a man broken after his relationship with the love of his life, Mary (Anderson), ends. When a mysterious letter from her calls him back to Silent Hill, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. While James desperately searches for Mary, he encounters terrifying creatures and begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to the town.

These horror releases are possible due to the joint effort of the three companies listed above. They have also been the promoters behind Terrifier 3, which had an impressive theatrical run that grossed more than $90 million from a $2 million production budget. Cineverse head Yolanda Macias stated the following:

“We have been anything but silent about our mission to champion proven IP as a central piece of our theatrical strategy. These two films will represent event viewing that meet fan demand for new releases from their favorite franchises, and an opportunity for them to reach a new audience.”

An “Unrated” Remake of ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ Could Represent Absolute Horror Mayhem

TriStar Pictures

The original Silent Night, Deadly Night is a horror classic for infamous reasons. The plot is already pretty controversial, and marketing was not easy. It depicted someone as iconic as Santa Claus on a violent rampage, and this touched some nerves in American society. It was so controversial that the PTA and parents around the country protested against the film, and it was ultimately pulled from screens.

Mark Rupp, an executive of Iconic Events Releasing, also talked about the theatrical deal, and he mentioned the word “unrated,” meaning that the film could be a more unhinged version of what we already imagine:

“Cineverse’s decision to release Silent Night, Deadly Night as an unrated wide theatrical title reflects a proven strategy that continues to resonate with genre fans and deliver results, and we’re confident it will be well-positioned for the holiday season.

“Return to Silent Hill hits theaters at the perfect time following the successful recent launch of the Silent Hill 2 game remake that the movie is based on, while also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the start of the horror film franchise.”
