Paul Mescal’s career has been on a meteoric rise, and he’s going to be a huge star. Before Normal People, the actor was a complete unknown, and only four years later, he’s already been nominated for an Emmy, a BAFTA, and an Academy Award, and has become a critics’ darling, as he keeps choosing to do indie films where characters are much more important than action. Not bad for someone who is only 28-years-old.
The actor keeps exercising all his acting muscles in the theater world in plays like A Streetcar Named Desire, and 2024 was full of new, exciting projects for him. He has shot a spy film named Spy by Nature, and will be part of Richard Linklater’s next experiment, Merrily We Roll Along, which should be shot over more than two decades in the Boyhood mold.
Mescal is also finally giving the blockbuster thing a chance, as he is starring in the long-awaited Ridley Scott epic Gladiator II, where he plays the lead character Lucius alongside acting greats Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal. The thrilling film is set to make its spectacular premiere on November 22, 2024, and critics are already raving about Mescal’s dominating portrayal. 11 Bump (2019)
Bump is a small Irish TV series about two sisters, one more formal named Liz (Charlenne McKenna) and one more wild Ciara (Gemma-Leah Deveraux), and how their relationship changes when Liz asks Ciara to be her surrogate mother. This short-lived 2019 TV series was one of Mescal’s first works, as he appeared as a guest star in an episode as the character of Matt.
A Small Yet Effective Appearance
Though Bump was just a minor stepping stone in his dazzling Hollywood career, it did help introduce Mascal to the masses and was one of the leading man’s earliest screen appearances. Just one year later, Mascal would go on to land his breakthrough performance in the psychological drama Normal People, which would further skyrocket the actor to superstardom. 10 Drifting (2020) – Short
Drifting is a short film directed by Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney. Although it’s only 14 minutes long, that’s enough time for Mescal to shine in a film that shows how childhood best friends Cian (Mescal) and Pat (Dafhyd Flynn) are drifting apart, as they want different things in life. Cian enjoys a laid-back partying lifestyle with little responsibilities, while Pat yearns for something bigger and better, leading to a rift forming between the longtime pals.
Drifting Becomes an Emotionally-Charged Short
As always, Mescal plays his part as raw and natural as possible, as his Cian is the one who is content with the life he has, and doesn’t need anything more from it. His chemistry with Flynn in the brief-yet-moving short helped the project pack an emotional punch and showcased his skills as a performer early on, and Drifting garnered praise upon its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh. 9 The Lost Daughter (2021)
The Lost Daughter is an incredible film by director Maggie Gyllenhaal. This is the tale of Leda (Olivia Colman), who, on a holiday in Greece, gets fixated on young mother Nina (Dakota Johnson) in a movie that feels like a modern feminist take on The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Mescal’s Dazzling Film Debut
This was Mescal’s feature debut, and although his role is not that big, he leaves his imprint on the film, as the easy, chill hotel worker who is having an affair with Nina. The main scene between Mescal and Colman, while having dinner and a lot of wine, might be the funniest and most charming in the whole film, proving the actor can hang with incredible, experienced actors like Olivia Colman. 8 The Deceived (2020)
The Deceived is an English TV series about Ophelia (Emilie Richard), a Cambridge student who has an affair with a lecturer, Dr. Michael Callaghan (Emmet J. Scanlan). Once she discovers she’s pregnant, Ophelia goes to Donegal (where he lives), and discovers his wife, Roisin (Catherine Walker), has just died in suspicious circumstances.
Mescal on the Cusp of Superstardom
Mescal has a supporting role as Sean McKeogh, a volunteer firefighter and builder in the town, who helps Ophelia discover what’s really happening. Although it’s not the biggest of roles, it’s already obvious that the camera loves him, as the show gains interest every time he appears on-screen. Shot after Normal People, but released before the Hulu TV series, this was the last time Mescal appeared in a show without everyone knowing he was going to be a star. Not currently streaming.
7 Carmen (2022)
Adapted from Bizet’s classic opera, Carmen is a unique film, as it mixes a musical structure with some very dramatic moments. This is the story of Carmen (Melissa Barrera), who tries to leave Mexico after her mother is killed, and the border patrol guard with PTSD from the war who saves her, Aidan (Mescal). The two go together to Los Angeles and fall in love in the process, while hoping the police never find them.
An Expressive & Experimental Performance
This engrossing musical drama is another instance of how Mescal loves to experiment and challenge himself, as here he must show he can dance, while using his body to express his feelings, something he’s an expert at, as he usually plays emotions very internally, and talks as much with his eyes and expressions, as with his words. 6 God’s Creatures (2022)
God’s Creatures is not an easy film, as it deals with sexual assault and the “boys will be boys” culture in a story that happens in a small Irish fishing village when Brian (Mescal) comes back home after years of living in Australia, and his mother, Aileen (an incredible Emily Watson), lies to protect him. This time, Mescal uses his charm for evil, as his character is a man-child who might be a much worse person than his mother thought she raised.
Mescal & Watson Dominate the Screen
Both performances are very understated and internal, and Mescal is able to sell this immature, selfish man using the same tools he normally uses to get audiences on his side, making this story even tougher to watch. Mescal earned a British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Performance, and when discussing the edgy role, Mescal told W Magazine:
“I wouldn’t have [this role] if I didn’t feel like they were interested in filling out the character in a way that is more true to people who commit sexual assault. They’re not just these monstrous kind of people who lurk around, they are people we recognize. And I wanted Brian to feel familiar to people.”

5 Foe (2023)
One of Mescal’s latest films has given him the chance to work with another incredible Irish actor, the one and only Saoirse Ronan, in Foe. The sci-fi film might be similar to a Black Mirror episode, as it tells the story of Junior (Mescal) and Hen (Ronan), a young couple living in the year 2065, who one day receive a strange visit from Terrance (Aaron Pierre), who tells them that Junior has been selected to go to space for two years.
Mescal & Ronan’s Winning Chemistry
The movie keeps having surprising twists and turns, but what holds it together are Mescal and Ronan, as both actors stay organic and grounded amid all the craziness that keeps happening around them. There are probably two reasons why Mescal decided to make this film: working with Ronan and a unique scene halfway through that proves what a great actor he is. Stream on Prime Video.
4 All of Us Strangers (2023)
Adapted from the novel by Taichi Yamada, this is a small fantasy film with a great, queer romance story. All of Us Strangers is another project that shows why Mescal is going to be a big star, as he nails his character and doesn’t mind being a supporting player in another actor’s lead role, making them even better. Here, the lead, Adam, is played by Andrew Scott (the hot priest in Fleabag). He’s the one having a dramatic arc, as he’s able to go visit his dead parents, who haven’t aged a day, and have the conversations with them he never could.
A Moving & Impactful Love Story
Mescal gives an incredible performance as a man smitten and absolutely in love with Adam, a man he has just met. He’s able to sell their relationship fully, proving the actor loves being part of indie stories that have formed characters with unique stories. All of Us Strangers attracted universal acclaim and received six BAFTA Award nominations, and was named one of the top 10 independent films of the year by the National Board of Review. 3 Gladiator II (2024)
After more than two decades of fans hoping and praying for a follow-up to Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning blockbuster, the revered director finally gave people what they wanted when he announced that Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Pedro Pascal would be headlining the historical action extravaganza Gladiator II. Mescal stars as Lucius, the son of Rusell Crowe’s Maximus and Lucilla, who sets out to become a fearless gladiator after his beloved home is invaded by the General Marcus Acacius (Pascal).

2 Normal People (2020)
Normal People was Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones’ breakout roles, as they played the titular couple in the Sally Rooney book adaptation. This is the love story of Connell and Marianne, which starts in high school and starts and stops over the years, as they have the worst timing ever. The show is one of the greatest TV romances of all time, and that’s a big part because of the chemistry between the actors, who subtly capture the many things left unsaid, the regret, and the loss involved in heartache, but also the love, admiration, and care they have for each other.

About the meaningful experience of working with Daisy Edgar-Jones, Mescal told IndieWire: “This is exciting, working with this great actor. We were going to have lots of fun playing these characters, day in and day out for five months […] We were looking at what we were doing today and tomorrow. Mescal has become a master at playing the silences, and the things not said, and here he uses that ability perfectly, as he’s able to show with a look, or a nod, all the turmoil inside him, making for a unique film about the bond between father and daughter.
