‘Doctor Who’ Reportedly Not Being Canceled Despite Disney Deal Ending

Following its unexpected Season 2 conclusion, the future of Doctor Who is once again in as much peril as The Doctor finds himself in across a regular season of the sci-fi show. After the show was “saved” by Disney, who delivered a hefty cash injection that seemed to be spent on mostly unnecessary CGI graphics, the deal with the Mouse House is now done, and it doesn’t look like they intend to regenerate their investment after the series failed to gain the kind of success they were expecting.

According to a new report from Daniel Richtman, Disney is not planning on giving another investment to the show, thus concluding their two-season contract. This seems to be the reason the second season ended the way it day, and why there has been no Christmas special or new season announcement. However, according to Richtman, this does not mean the show is about to be canceled again ahead of the 20th anniversary of its latest revival. Richtman says that deals are being done to continue the show, and they look “hopeful,” but it seems that they will not be with Disney.

The Problems With Doctor Who

Doctor Who has come under fire in the last several years, with long-term fans of the show turning against the series’ “heavy-handed messaging,” “woke casting,” and “terrible writing.” Whether the claims and complaints are justified or not, Doctor Who has now become another IP that is transforming the show for new audiences but apparently alienating existing fans in the process.

While things became bad under the tenure of Chris Chibnall, an accomplished enough writer, but a wrong fit for Doctor Who, as the series started focusing on long monologs about real world issues rather than just having a man in a box flying through space and defeating untold horrors each week. And yes, the “man” is obviously the other bone of contention, as fans did not take well to the gender-swapping of The Doctor to Jodie Whittaker – although her role was not made any easier by the writing of her episodes and divisive additions like “The Timeless Child” canon breaker.

When Ncuti Gatwa took over the role, things seemed to be getting on track again. Despite David Tennant’s return and “bigeneration” atory, fans seemed to be willing to give the show a shot again, especially with Russell T. Davies back on board leading the series. However, online complaints over the show’s influx of diverse characters and “woke” storylines have continued to plague the series, along with gripes over the recent seasons relying heavily on nostalgia, callbacks, and bringing back characters only a few viewers really remember, and doing so in a way that makes a big reveal seem a bit limp.

Now, the latest twist of former companion Billie Piper returning as the latest iteration of the Time Lord/Lady has been left hanging as everyone awaits news on whether this twist will actually be resolved. There have been rumors that David Tennant is set to return one more time to both celebrate the anniversary of the show this year, and complete the “bigeneration” story, but whether that is true – or indeed possible – is something that only time will tell.
