Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan is reportedly in talks to join the star-studded cast of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation for Netflix. The project also has Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, and Emma Mackey reportedly attached. Mulligan is an acclaimed actress who has garnered Oscar nominations for her work in Maestro, Promising Young Woman, and her breakthrough role in An Education. Her other notable credits include performances in films such as Never Let Me Go, Drive, and Inside Llewyn Davis.
Gerwig, whose last directorial effort was the history-making Barbie, is not only set to direct but has also penned the screenplay for the Netflix project. Given Gerwig’s impressive attention to detail in crafting Barbie‘s layered and vibrant world, our expectations for her vision of Narnia are strong. We expect that Gerwig will bring a high level of imaginative depth to C.S. Lewis’ magical realm.

Netflix’s ‘Narnia’ Movie Has Conjured Up Its White Witch in ‘Sex Education’ and ‘Barbie’ Star
Netflix’s ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ has reportedly chosen its new White Witch.
Gerwig’s Narnia installment will be based on the sixth novel in Lewis’s seven-book series, The Magician’s Nephew. The Magician’s Nephew serves as a prequel to The Chronicles of Narnia and explores the origins of Lewis’ enchanted land. The novel is set in Victorian London and focuses on two kids, Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first broke the news of Mulligan’s possible involvement, the story follows the “two youngsters who, thanks to an uncle’s magic dabbling, unleash the evil White Witch into a turn-of-the 20th century London.”
Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Adaptation Takes Shape with Star-Studded Cast
Mulligan will portray Digory’s ill mother if the deal comes to fruition. Mackey is set to appear as the White Witch, while Craig is set to be tackling the role of one of the Digory’s uncle. Streep, who holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor with 21 nods and three wins (for 1979’s Kramer vs. Kramer, 1982’s Sophie’s Choice, and 2011’s The Iron Lady), is reportedly slated to portray the talking lion Aslan.
While casting is underway, production is still searching for the central roles of the two child protagonists, Digory and Polly. Late last year, rumors circulated that Gerwig could reunite with Lady Bird actress Saoirse Ronan for the Narnia adaptation. While promoting The Outrun, Ronan revealed that she had not been asked by Gerwig to appear in the feature, clarifying:
“There isn’t like, no truth to it. She hasn’t asked me yet; she’s writing it. But we have the kind of relationship where I just sort of go to her and I say, ‘So, I’ll be in this, just so you know’ and she takes some time to think about it and she goes, ‘Okay.'”
Gerwig’s Narnia work for Netflix is reportedly a multi-film commitment, with plans for at least two features. Lewis’ fantasy series includes seven novels set in Narnia, a magical world filled with talking animals and mythical creatures. The stories follow the adventures of different children who are transported to Narnia.
The film is scheduled to begin production this year, and is scheduled to land in IMAX theaters on Thanksgiving Day 2026, before making its way to Netflix before Christmas.
