Jamie Carragher highlights two positions of concern for Liverpool due to the lack of trust in players from Arne Slot. The Liverpool legend addressed how Slot has repeatedly played the same players every week despite the continuous signs of fatigue.
Furthermore, many of the regular starters struggled with form in recent months, yet managed to maintain their first-team role. There is no denying that Slot’s first season is a huge success, with the Reds closing in on their 20th title.
The former Feyenoord boss used the first season to assess the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp before this season. Liverpool only added Federico Chiesa during the summer of 2024 as Slot made several tactical changes to help the club.
Nevertheless, the upcoming summer transfer window will play a pivotal role after Liverpool crashed out of all cup competitions recently. Newcastle United beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final after Paris Saint-Germain eliminated the Reds from the Champions League competition.
The situation is the same that the Reds faced last season under Klopp, with the squad failing to maintain form. While last season’s struggle had an injury crisis as a mitigating factor, this season, Slot’s lack of rotation caused fatigue.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast (via YouTube), Carragher highlighted the lack of trust in the Liverpool squad that Slot has displayed this season and mentioned two positions that need recruitment this summer. He said:
“Arne Slot doesn’t trust the squad. When people talk about Liverpool at the end of the season, their style during the winter is not the same and is not consistent like the rest of the season. Slot plays the same players every week. We don’t know if that’s his way of play, but we will probably find out next season. If Ibrahima Konate or Virgil van Dijk got injured, who would come in at the back really? They have Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez, who is injury prone. Liverpool need another centre-back to really push Konate. The same also applies in central midfield with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.”
Carragher has a valid point that concerns a lot of Liverpool fans as well. While the fans have defended some players for their lack of playing time, many players have struggled with consistency.
Liverpool cannot afford to have such an unused quantity, and it is mutually beneficial for these players and the club to go their separate ways. At the same time, the defensive and midfield positions need recruitment to challenge the first-team regulars.
