UEFA pays record €233m to clubs for international player releases

April 22 – The reigning Premier League Champions, Manchester City, have been allocated €5.17 million ($5.94 million), as part of the European football governing body’s Club Benefits Programme to encourage national team participation by players.

This figure represents the largest allocation to any UEFA club.

In all, a record €233 million was distributed to 901 clubs from all 55 member associations for releasing players to national team competitions: the 2020-21 and 2022-23 UEFA Nations League, European Championship qualifiers 2022-24 and Euro 2024.

“It is fantastic to see clubs of all sizes and levels, across the entire football pyramid, receiving financial rewards for their vital role in developing players who contribute to the success of our national team competitions – including the highly successful UEFA Euro 2024 final tournament,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said.

“Every success of our competitions is a shared one, and this benefits programme is another testament to that principle … When football thrives, everyone benefits.”

Following City was Spanish and Italian powerhouses, Real Madrid and Inter Milan respectively with €4.79 million, and €4.65 million going to the two clubs.

The formula devised by UEFA is that clubs receive an equal share for each player released for Nations League and European Championship qualifiers, as well as a fixed amount per player per day during the final tournament.

To prove how democratic the system is clubs throughout the football pyramid benefited with a 10th-tier English side – Yorkshire Amateur – receiving €7,300.

The amount of money for the release of players has been growing yearly with the current cycle up €30 million from the previous payment.

The European Championship figure also increased, from €130 million to €140 million, with funds distributed to 196 clubs from 29 UEFA member associations.
