Warning: Spoilers for the School Spirits season 2 finale.
The latest season of School Spirits has drastically raised the stakes, and now season 3 has a lot of questions to answer and mysteries to solve. Granted, School Spirits season 2’s ending resolved some lingering questions, including Janet’s motives and her complicated history with Mr. Martin. While Maddie’s death twist in School Spirits was the show’s most shocking revelation, season 2 delivered yet another game-changing moment in its final sequence — one that created the same sense of mystery and urgency.
Throughout the new season, the show subtly paved the way for the characters’ future arcs, with the finale leaving them on the cusp of some big changes. While season 3 has yet to be officially confirmed by Paramount, School Spirits’ viewership increase on streaming suggests that there is a good chance the show will continue,

What Do The Flashing Red Lights Mean?
How Will They Affect Split River High?
Creator Nate Trinrud has confirmed the flashing red lights are a consequence of the ghosts entering their scars all at once, telling US Magazine that they “did something to the school.” Just how Split River High has been affected remains a mystery, one that Trinrud hopes to be able to explore in a potential School Spirits season 3. Notably, he hints at a larger town mystery, one that might explain why there are so many deaths at school and how the place connects to other paranormal sites.
On the other hand, Janet’s theory believed that activating all scars could make the energy fence around the school disappear. This would mean Rhonda, Charley, and the other characters could move outside the school, successfully expanding the setting of the series. The ghosts could choose not to cross over yet, especially if they wanted to help Janet explore the larger town mystery. Additionally, Mr. Martin confirmed that activating the scars thins the veil between the living and the dead, so more students could start seeing the ghosts, allowing for fresh interactions.

What Will Happen To Rhonda, Charley, And The Other School Ghosts?
Will They Be Able To Cross Over After The Flashing Red Lights?
It’s possible that whatever happened at Split River High could prevent the ghosts from crossing over, mainly if the flashing red lights mean something bad (and they usually do). This would effectively force them to investigate what Mr. Martin talked about. However, now that the professor is trapped, School Spirits needs a new villain. Though there are no signs of it, the force at school could be aware and decide to punish the ghosts for defying the rules of purgatory.
Rhonda may wait until Quinn is ready, which could involve helping all the other marching band ghosts.
As is, it is genuinely surprising that Charley and Rhonda’s exit doors haven’t opened yet. Sarah Yarkin’s character was arguably the most likely to cross over this season, as she finally let people in and even forgave herself for trusting Mr. Manfredo. However, Rhonda may wait until Quinn is ready, which could involve helping all the other marching band ghosts. Charley, too, could want to stay with School Spirits‘ Yuri now that they have officially started dating. Notably, Miles Elliot’s character hasn’t entered his scar, and Charley could also be inclined to help Janet as well.

Will Xavier & Nicole Start Dating?
Their Relationship Is Still Unclear
The final School Spirits episodes see the living kids’ bonds strengthen as Simon and Xavier develop an alluring bromance and Claire and Nicole become each other’s ride or die. While season 1 established an early platonic tension between Xavier and Nicole, season 2 heavily implies it could develop into something romantic. Notably, their “You’ve Got Mail” dynamic allows the characters to put their walls down through a screen, only to find a comfortable space in their in-person connection, which involves a lot of old-couple-type bickering.

Schools Spirits Season 2 Nearly Had A Different Ending For Janet, Showrunner Explains Why Her Fate Was Changed
School Spirits showrunner Oliver Goldstick reveals that Janet’s season 2 fate was almost far more different and explains why it changed in the finale.
MacPherson and Picardo have teased the School Spirits‘ storyline, admitting they “don’t know where it’s going to go,” but MacPherson believes “it’s good for [Xavier]“. While even Claire suspects something is going on between the two, Maddie’s return could see old feelings resurge, especially when Xavier is the one person who can see her dead dad. In turn, this could provoke a bit of a love triangle between the friends. Still, it would make more sense that Simon and Maddie’s relationship develops, considering their intense connection even made Wally jealous.

Will Maddie Still Be Able To See The School Ghosts, Including Simon?
Now That She’s Alive
Maddie going back to her body was an unexpected way to end season 2. Not only was she hesitant to go back to living, but her returning to her body seemed to give the series a definite end. There are two ways I can see her story going. On the one hand, her return sets up her stalled relationships with the living characters to be explored, which hopefully includes a reconciliation with her mother.
On the other hand, Maddie’s connections to the school ghosts may have reached a natural conclusion, as it’s unclear whether she’s going to be able to see Rhonda and Charley (since it’s possible that Wally crossed over) now that she’s alive. Though it’d be sad if she couldn’t see her ghost friends, what’s most important is answering whether Peyton List’s character can see Simon. If she can see him, season 3 could flip their dynamic, having Simon communicate with the school ghosts while Maddie teams up with Nicole, Xavier, and Claire.

How Will Maddie & Xavier Help Her Dad Cross Over?
Season 3 Should Explore The Hospital Setting
As Xavier confesses to Maddie that he sees her father in the hospital, the show sets up several routes for season 3. While the characters’ main mission will take them to Split River High — assuming they will try to save Simon — the exes could find themselves exploring the hospital setting. Now that Sandra and her daughter’s relationship is in a better place, Maddie could feel a desire to reconnect with her dead dad, which might see her rely on Xavier to do so.
The hospital might connect to the school somehow, as both are purgatory sites, though their rules might differ.
Naturally, two of the lingering questions of School Spirits‘ season 2 are whether Maddie will get to see her dad and if Xavier’s ability to see all hospital ghosts is still working. It would certainly be interesting if School Spirits introduced new spirits since Maddie might be able to help them cross over. The hospital might connect to the school somehow, as both are purgatory sites, though their rules might differ. The father-daughter reunion might be possible if the veil between the living and the dead continues to thin, depending on whether Janet continues experimenting on the school.

Did Wally Cross Over?
His Exit Door Is Open
Speaking on Wally seeing the light in School Spirits, creators Nate and Megan Trinru said, “Anything could happen.“ Though they noted his exit door opening proves his character’s growth, they also implied he, like Janet, has a choice to make. While letting go of Maddie successfully detaches him from wanting to be a ghost, Wally might decide to stay to make sure Rhonda, Charley, and Janet are okay. Notably, Milo Manheim’s character is very protective of those he cares about, and it seems fitting that he will co-lead the paranormal investigation with Janet.

School Spirits Season 2 Ending: Janet’s Fate & Decision To Cross Explained By Star
Jess Gabor, who plays Janet on Paramount+’s School Spirits, discusses her character’s fate and surprising decision in the season 2 finale.
Accordinly, creators have teased, “there are a lot of clues in the finale that I think if you look closely at you can sort of see where this might be going,” (US Magazine) which may be hinting at Wally finding a new purpose. However, it’s also possible that, with Charley pairing up with Yuri and Rhonda getting closer to Quinn, Wally might want to make peace for himself. This could also be an opportunity for the show to introduce what’s behind the bright lights and offer a glimpse into the great beyond.

Why Is Simon Stuck In Janet’s Scar?
Is He Dead?
Although audiences aren’t quite sure what to make of Simon being stuck in Janet’s scar, he is certainly poised to be a central focus of School Spirits‘ season 3. Creators have been reluctant to confirm whether he is dead, alive, or something in between, but they seem excited to explore what comes next, describing it as a “new expansion.” Notably, if the veil between the living and the dead thinned, it would explain how Simon was able to enter the scar while still being alive — which could set up a mission to save him.
Unfortunately, however, he might not have survived the entrance. In the same interview, Nate Trinrud highlighted that Simon is suffering the consequences of his relentless dedication to Maddie, as he constantly risked his well-being for her. Notably, when Janet finds him, all he says is, “Where is Maddie?” which suggests that Simon could have died out of worry and might be looping himself on the thought that he couldn’t save her. Though heartbreaking, Maddie maybe will have to deal with the guilt over his passing, as he wouldn’t have a way to return to life.

What Does Mr Martin Know About The School?
He Suggests Something There Has Caused The Deaths
Though hopes were the ghosts got rid of him for good, Mr. Martin remains necessary for the next season of School Spirits. Even if he and Janet were studying the school together, it’s hinted that he might have been the one in charge all along, withholding key information about the paranormal. During season 2’s final confrontation, the chemistry teacher suggests he had been protecting the group of ghosts from something larger than them, perhaps the truth about their deaths.
While a popular School Spirits fan theory believes Mr. Martin killed the former Split River High students, the character suggests he knows what or who is responsible and considers himself a victim of the bigger force. Though he could still be manipulating the ghosts, the creators’ comments that “something is going on in this town” confirm that Mr. Martin might actually be scared of what he found out. With so many character and lore mysteries left to uncover, School Spirits‘ season 3 could be the show’s biggest — that is, if it happens.
