Aside from Beauty in Black, Tyler Perry’s most recent project to receive a Netflix release is the war drama The Six Triple Eight. The Six Triple Eight is based on the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion in World War II, which was the only all-woman, all-Black battalion. The movie centers on the battalion’s work to sort and send a massive backlog of unsent mail to troops across various locations, resulting in the women organizing an estimated 17 million parcels.
The Six Triple Eight is worth watching due to the incredible true story alone, but the entertaining and educational plot is certainly boosted by the impressive performances. The Six Triple Eight‘s cast is led by Kerry Washington alongside a talented supporting cast. While Tyler Perry’s historical movie is very different plot-wise to Beauty in Black, the movie does display Perry’s ability to tell a wide variety of stories across different genres. Perry’s writing and direction help bring the women’s stories to life and will keep audiences entertained throughout.

One common thread between many of Tyler Perry’s movies and TV shows is just how much he explores the complex relationships that emerge between people in different social circumstances. In Beauty in Black, Perry does this by contrasting Kimmie and Mallory’s lives, and in A Jazzman’s Blues he does this through the character Bayou and his relationships with his family and with his love interest Leanne.

Netflix’s movie stars Kelly Rowland as Mea Harper, a successful attorney whose personal life is filled with strife thanks to her crumbling marriage and troubled relationship with her mother-in-law. In her unhappiness with her marriage, Mea becomes professionally and personally entangled with Zyair, an artist accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend. As Mea digs deeper into Zyair’s case, she realizes that there is far more to the story than she knows, and it relates to the people closest to her.
While Mea Culpa may be best considered a guilty pleasure, it is undeniably entertaining.
Like Beauty in Black, Mea Culpa is filled with dramatic twists and reveals that will keep audiences guessing until the final minutes. Though the movie received negative reviews from critics, Mea Culpa was massively popular with audiences thanks to its fast pacing and steamy moments between Rowland’s Mea and Trevante Rhodes’ Zyair. While Mea Culpa may be best considered a guilty pleasure, it is undeniably entertaining.

Divorce in the Black is another one of Tyler Perry’s 2024 releases, and it even features several actors from Beauty in Black. In particular, Taylor Polidore, who stars as Kimmie in Perry’s new series, makes an appearance as Rona in Divorce in the Black, as do Richard Lawson and Debbi Morgan. Additionally, the movie highlights a strong female character, Ava, at the center of its narrative and her journey from a bad place to coming out on top of those who had once tormented her, which shares some similarities to Kimmie in Beauty in Black.
Divorce in the Black begins with Ava’s marriage to Dallas, who treats her incredibly poorly. As the movie continues, Dallas and his family’s treatment of Ava contrasts sharply with her own family and friends, creating an interesting divide in the character’s search for herself and her own power. Divorce in the Black has a shocking 0% Rotten Tomatoes rating, but don’t let that stop you from watching, as the majority of audience reviews are actually incredibly positive, showing that audiences see something critics missed.

I Can Do Bad All By Myself is the perfect example of Tyler Perry’s signature combination of humor and difficult emotional moments. While the movie exists within the Madea universe, Taraji P. Henson’s performance as April, along with her relationships with Sandino and her nephews and niece, differentiate it from the other films in the series. Madea can often create tonal inconsistencies in Perry’s works, but Henson leads the cast as a woman trying her best to care for those around her despite the lack of care that she herself has received.
Henson’s April is both a troubled nightclub singer and a woman trying her best to care for children who are otherwise by themselves, creating a protagonist you can’t help but root for.
As with many of Tyler Perry’s works, I Can Do Bad All By Myself explores social issues, but through a very entertaining lens that will have audiences hoping for a positive conclusion. Henson’s April is both a troubled nightclub singer and a woman trying her best to care for children who are otherwise by themselves, creating a protagonist you can’t help but root for. In short, I Can Do Bad All By Myself is essential viewing for fans of Tyler Perry’s other dramas, especially while waiting for Beauty in Black to return for season 2.
