October 14 – One of Colombia’s most iconic stadiums, the Estadio Metropolitano, located in of Barranquilla, is set for a major facelift.
The City Council is publishing a public tender to expand the venue’s current capacity from 46,692 to more than 60,000 seats. The redevelopment will not come cheaply, though, with an estimated cost of 180 billion Colombian pesos (£34.6m/€39.7m/$45.9m).
Opened in 1986, which is recent by South American standards, the Metropolitano is the home of Atlético Junior and the Colombian national team. Barranquilla mayor and Atlético Junior president Alejandro Char (surely a coincidence) announced earlier this year that the renovation would bring the stadium “to another level”, aligning it with international standards for major tournaments and cultural events.
The redevelopment of the venue mirrors a growing trend across the continent of South America, where aging stadiums need to be modernized or, in some cases, completely rebuilt.
The expansion of the Metropolitano is a statement of intent, signifying that Atlético Junior and Colombian football will not be left behind as stadiums enter a new era of modernity.
