As October wears on and Halloween comes closer, it is a perfect time to sit down and watch some movies, and Netflix has fantastic options that recently arrived on the streaming service to choose from. The streaming platform remains one of the biggest around, and the options are often overwhelming to dig through.
Luckily, there are plenty of great options to choose from, including some spooky horror releases, one of the best R-rated comedies of all time, and even a movie that later became a Netflix streaming series itself. To make it easy, we have picked out three movies currently streaming on Netflix that should make anyone happy.
Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
For many years, Beverly Hills Cop was the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time, until The Hangover knocked it out of the top spot on the box office charts. However, of the two movies, it is Beverly Hills Cop that remains a beloved classic, and a film that fans still point to this day as a masterwork cop comedy.
Eddie Murphy was a rising star at the time, but his performance as Axel Foley made him one of the top movie stars around, and his performance hits as hard today as it did four decades ago. There was a new movie in the franchise in 2024, but Netflix now gives fans a chance to see where it all started.
The action is great, the supporting cast is masterful, led by Judge Reinhold and Bronson Pinchot’s performances, and the comedy is still as sharp and hilarious as it was in the 1980s. Anyone wanting a good laugh and a fun action-packed movie won’t find many better than Beverly Hills Cop.
Death Becomes Her (1992)
For anyone looking to watch a dark fantasy comedy this Halloween season, Death Becomes Her is one that doesn’t get talked about enough. Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future), the movie stars Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn as two women who drink a potion promising eternal youth.
The movie lives and dies with Streep and Hawn’s performances, as they both deliver some great physical comedy, while Zemeckis digitally adds some gruesome and hilarious gore to their bodies as they remain mostly immortal. Bruce Willis also stars against type as a weak and manipulated man, both pathetic and sympathetic.
Anyone wanting to see a funny and not-too-gory fantasy about two women who get the immortality they wished for, but with a great cost, should love everything about Death Becomes Her. It is darkly funny and delivers a great story that rises above what could have been a B-level movie premise.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
Most Netflix subscribers already know the basic story for The Lincoln Lawyer, thanks to the streaming series based on the novels by Michael Connelly. However, while the streaming series was popular, fans now have a chance to see the movie that came out years before the series ever premiered.
Matthew McConaughey stars as Mickey Haller, the titular lawyer in the movie directed by Brad Furman. In the film, he defends a wealthy young man (Ryan Phillippe) accused of murder. Anyone who loves courtroom dramas with twists and turns will love this one, and Mickey is a brilliant lawyer who always finds a way to do the right thing.
Anyone searching for someting they haven’t seen on Netflix this week, but who loves the streaming series based on the novels, should watch the movie. It is just a good, if not better than even the show. It’s a perfect legal thriller for anyone to watch on Netflix as October begins to come to a close.
