12 Years Later, Gerard Butler’s Fan-Favorite Action Thriller Defies Critics as It Shoots Up Free Streaming Charts

Action movie favorite Gerard Butler takes the lead in what is arguably his best no-nonsense action hero role to date. An argument bolstered by the fact that it’s now climbing the free streaming charts. Butler has become known for his magnetically gruff screen presence, and he’s rarely put these qualities to better use than when playing the unstoppable Mike Banning.

Butler first appeared as Banning, the seemingly invincible Secret Service agent and former Army Ranger, a whole 12 years ago in 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen. The first installment in what’s become known as the Has Fallen franchise, Banning faces his toughest test yet (well, up to that point and before the sequels) when the White House is taken over by terrorists. Olympus Has Fallen is now climbing the charts on the free streaming platform, Tubi, where its joined by the likes of the horror sequel Saw II, the fantasy outing Practical Magic, Brendan Fraser’s action-adventure flick The Mummy, and Kevin Costner’s action movie The Guardian. You can check out the official synopsis for Olympus Has Fallen below…

“The unthinkable happens when heavily armed and highly trained terrorists launch a bold daytime attack on the White House. The building is overrun, and President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) and his staff are taken hostage. Luckily for Asher, former presidential security officer Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is on the scene. With time running out, it’s up to Banning to locate Asher’s son before the extremists do and rescue the president before his captors unleash their ultimate plan.”

Will We Ever See ‘Night Has Fallen’?

Lionsgate

Directed and co-produced by Antoine Fuqua from a screenplay written by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, and starring Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Dylan McDermott, Radha Mitchell, and Rick Yune alongside Butler, Olympus Has Fallen was met with a divisive response upon release, as reflected in the 49% and 66% scores from critics and audiences respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first Has Fallen movie, however, did spark a franchise with London Has Fallen (which is also available on Tubi) hitting 2016, followed by Angel Has Fallen in 2019. Fans are still waiting for a fourth outing, Night Has Fallen, which has been in the works since 2020. The last we heard of the fourth movie was in 2023, with Butler saying, “We have a script for that, but I haven’t been working on it at the moment. We have a really fun idea, it just needs to be to be developed.” But for those desperate for more Has Fallen-style adventures, there’s the spin-off TV series which has already been renewed for a second season.

In terms of Gerard Butler-led sequels, the Has Fallen star has several already in varying stages of development, including the upcoming Greenland 2: Migration, which will see Butler surviving the post-apocalypse, and the crime thriller follow-up Den of Thieves 3.
