10 Upcoming Romantasy Books That Will Fill The Onyx Storm-Shaped Hole In Your Heart

10 Upcoming Romantasy Books That Will Fill The Onyx Storm-Shaped Hole In Your Heart

Onyx Storm was one of this year’s biggest romantasy book releases, and after nearly a year of anticipating its debut, it’s no surprise some readers have finished the book at a complete loss about what to read next. It’s likely there will be a long wait until the next Fourth Wing book is released—but thankfully, there is an abundance of upcoming romantic fantasy novels that will help to fill the void Onyx Storm has left behind.

Readers love Yarros’ Empyrean Series novels for its incredibly high-stakes, unique magic system, and intense romantic chemistry between its main characters—and several upcoming novels promise to provide fans with a similar reading experience. While some are standalone romantasy novels, many are sequels to well-loved series that will be released in the near future—and will provide Fourth Wing fans with even more options to read once finished with Onyx Storm.

Rebel Witch

Written By Kristin Ciccarelli

Rebel Witch by Kristen Ciccarelli book cover

Rebel Witch is another highly anticipated sequel, and the final novel in the Crimson Moth duology. The first book in the duology follows the lives of Rune Winters and Gideon Sharpe, a witch and witch-hunter, who find themselves falling for one another in spite of their many secrets and differences. However, book one left off with their secrets unveiled and their true natures revealed—and Rebel Witch will pick up in the aftermath, and see both Rune and Gideon on opposite sides of an impending war between the witches and humans.

Fourth Wing‘s romance is full of tension and steamy chemistry, and Rebel Witch is set up to be the perfect replacement after Onyx Storm.

However, in Ciccarelli’s upcoming sequel, it seems the enemies-to-lovers romance will be taken up a notch, as the two enemies will need to work together to accomplish dangerous goals. Ciccarelli’s Heartless Hunter was endlessly praised for its unique relationship dynamic and witty banter between its main characters, and it’s more than likely Rebel Witch will provide readers with even more yearning, given the plot of the novel officially marks the two as enemies. Fourth Wing‘s romance is full of tension and steamy chemistry, and Rebel Witch is set up to be the perfect replacement after Onyx Storm.

Oathbound, book three in the Legendborn Cycle series, is a young adult romantasy set for release on March 4, 2025. The series follows 16-year-old Bree Mathews as she joins a secret society of student demon hunters called Legendborn, who are also descendents of King Aurthur’s Knights, all in order to infiltrate their ranks and discover the truth about her mother’s death. The Legendborn Cycle series has an incredibly intriguing magic system, making it a perfect read for fans of Fourth Wing.

Alchemized

Alchemized, is probably one of, if not the most, anticipated romantasy books of 2025. Author SenLinYu first rose to fame for the popular Dramione fanfiction, Manacled—which reworked the ending of the Harry Potter series, picking up in the aftermath of Order of the Phoenix. However, SenLinYu’s first traditionally published novel, Alchemized, will take the original plot found in Manacled, and reimagine it by building out her own original world and magic system—separating the story from the Harry Potter IP.

“What is it you think you’re protecting in that brain of yours? The war is over. Holdfast is dead. The Eternal Flame extinguished. There’s no one left for you to save.”

—Alchemized, SenLinYu

Alchemized will follow the life of the once promising alchemist, Helena Marino, and transport readers into a war-torn world of necromancy and alchemy. Picking up in the aftermath of a long war, the book’s heroine finds herself with inexplicable memory loss and as a prisoner at the hands of her enemy—the High Reeve, one of the most powerful necromancers. SenLinYu’s Alchemized will still include fan-favorite moments from Manacled, all while introducing new characters and world-building of her own creation.

Rose In Chains

Written By Julie Soto

Rose In Chains by Julie Soto book cover

Rose In Chains by Julie Soto, is the first book in The Evermore Trilogy, and is set for release on July 8, 2025. Rose In Chains is another Dramione fanfic-turned-novel, originally titled The Auction. However, slight changes have been made from the original story to differentiate Soto’s reimagining from the Harry Potter IP. The story will now focus on Briony Rosewood, Rose In Chains‘ main protagonist, as her castle is overrun by the dark forces of Bomard.

Being one of the last surviving members of the Eversuns, and sister to the now-deceased heir apparent, Briony is considered to be the greatest spoil of war, and is auctioned off at the highest price and sold to Toven—a high-ranking Bomardsun and the source of her ill-fated infatuation. Julie Soto is also the bestselling author of Forget Me Not and Not Another Love Song—with Rose In Chains marking her traditionally published debut into the romantasy genre.

The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar is an ethereal romantasy novella following the lives of the Hawthorne family and their small town of Thistleford on the edge of Faerie. The story centers around two sisters, Esther and Ysabel, who cannot be separated—even in death. While the story greatly depicts the strong bond between sisters, it also engages readers with its beautiful prose and a unique magic system. The River Has Roots sets itself apart from a typical fantasy romance, and as it’s a shorter read, makes it the perfect novel to get readers out of their Onyx Storm slump.

Scythe & Sparrow

Written By Brynne Weaver

Scythe & Sparrow by Brynne Weaver book cover

Scythe & Sparrow, the third novel in the Ruinous Love Trilogy by Brynne Weaver, is set for release on February 11, 2025. And while categorized in the romantic comedy genre, it is still a great series to pick up after Onyx Storm. The Ruinous Love Trilogy is a series of interconnected stand-alone novels, all depicting a different romance between the Kane brothers and the women they fall in love with.

While there is no magical element to this series, the chemistry and romantic tension is what recommends itself as a perfect Fourth Wing replacement novel.

Scythe & Sparrow will this time feature the romance between a circus motorcycle performer, Rose, and a lonely small-town doctor, Fionn. The first two in the series, Butcher & Blackbird and Leather & Lark, featured a significant amount of spicy content and intimate scenes. And while there is no magical element to this series, the chemistry and romantic tension is what recommends itself as a perfect Fourth Wing replacement novel.

Fearless, the third and final book in the Powerless Trilogy, will continue to follow Paedyn Gray’s journey in the Kingdom of Ilya, and explore her relationships with both the king and her former friend, Kitt Azer, and his enforcer, and charming brother, Kai Azer. Paedyn Gray is an Ordinary, making her one of the only powerless humans who has escaped death at the hands of the Elites—who have been gifted with a variety of magical abilities, and consider Ordinaries to be a threat to society.

The end of Reckless—book two in the series—left readers with a major cliffhanger, as Paedyn is brought back to the kingdom of Ilya expecting to be put in prison or put to death for killing their father—and the former king. But instead, Roberts includes a shocking plot twist, seeing Kitt offer Paedyn his hand in marriage over death. After months of wondering how this development would affect Paedyn and Kai’s budding relationship, Fearless, releasing on April, 8, 2025, will finally answer readers’ long-awaited questions.

Callie Hart’s Quicksilver Sequel Tease Makes Me Nervous For The Series Beloved Characters

Callie Hart’s Quicksilver sequel is highly-anticipated, but her latest tease to the second book’s plot could mean several characters are at risk.

However, Callie Hart’s previous Brimstone teaser caused some concern heading into the next novel. The author, at an event with UK retailer, Waterstones, mentioned that the Quicksilver sequel would be “mayhem from page one, until the end“. The author also preemptively apologized for any tears that would be shed during Brimstone, and given the series has yet to see any major character deaths, it’s possible the next book in the Fae & Alchemy series could have more than one.
