10 TV Series That Ended in 2024

2024 was a phenomenal year for television, introducing fans to Man on the Inside, the live-action Avatar: the Last Airbender, and Nobody Wants This, to name just a few series. However, it also marked the departure of many beloved (and some not-so-beloved) TV shows, some which ended on the perfect note and others that were canceled far too soon.

From Westerns to adult cartoons and horror, every genre saw its fair share of series come to a close. As we prepare to say goodbye to the year, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best and worst TV endings of 2024.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ (2019)

Release Date

February 15, 2019

Seasons

3

Based on the eponymous comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy follows the super-powered, adopted Hargreeves siblings as they reunite to fend off an apocalypse (and then, several more apocalypses). With many memorable scenes and knockout performances, such as Robert Sheehan as Klaus and Elliot Page as Viktor, the series was a hit with audiences. However, by season 3, the fabric of the series had begun to unravel, and when its final season came along, it was outright villainous.

A Disastrous Ending

Season 4 premiered in August of this year and was packed with amazing guest stars. Unfortunately, that’s one of the only parts of the season that viewers praised. Offering more questions than answers, fans agreed that season 4’s ending didn’t make sense, and the show deserved a better send-off.

Seasons

Based on a Korean TV show and starring the familiar-looking Freddie Highmore, The Good Doctor depicted the romantic and professional life of Dr. Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism. Other doctors at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital originally opposed him working there, but thanks to his skills and the support of his father figure, Dr. Glassman (played by Richard Schiff), they eventually came around and accepted him as part of the team.

As the series progressed, Shaun married, started a family, and continued to prove himself at the hospital. He also faced several challenges as he was confronted with loved ones’ health scares and oversaw a team of medical students. By the series’ end, Shaun learned how to be not simply a good doctor, but a great one.

Not All Good Reactions

The Good Doctor has been a source of memes since its inception, with many criticizing its portrayal of autism. At the same time, some consider it one of the best shows of the 2010s, with critics praising Highmore’s performance. The series’ ending was generally well-received, and a spin-off titled The Good Lawyer was slated to follow. Unfortunately, ABC decided not to move forward with the series.

‘Velma’ (2023)

Velma

Release Date

January 12, 2023

Network

HBO Max

Marketed as a Scooby-Doo prequel, the adult cartoon Velma struggled to find its audience. Considered too bad to even hate-watch, the show focused on the character of Velma as she solved crimes, dealt with high school drama, and generally revealed herself to be a terrible person. Due to the show’s strange humor, cynicism, and poor characterization, many were surprised when Velma was given a second season. Fortunately, this season (plus a holiday special) would be Velma’s last.

No Mystery Why It Was Canceled

Since the show’s first episode, Scooby-Doo fans were upset by its lack of Scooby-Doo and other huge character changes, while many others found the show’s humor off-putting or simply unfunny. Velma definitely left its mark on the Scooby-Doo canon, but it’s a mark some viewers soon hope to forget.

7

‘Yellowstone’ (2018)

Starring Kevin Costner as John Dutton, Luke Grimes and Wes Bentley as his sons Kayce and Jamie, and Kelly Reilly as his daughter Beth, Yellowstone centers on a family living on a ranch near Yellowstone National Park. The ranch is constantly in conflict with the park, the nearby Native American reservation, land developers, and other entities along its shared borders. Add to that politics, murder, and familial drama, and it’s little wonder that the modern American Western garnered a large, devoted audience.

Plenty to Watch Next

Although the fifth and final season faced backlash, its viewership remained high. Fortunately, the show already has several spin-offs, and show director Taylor Sheridan recently announced a worthwhile replacement.

6

‘Snowpiercer’ (2020)

Release Date

May 17, 2020

Cast

Daveed Diggs
, Mickey Sumner
, Alison Wright
, Iddo Goldberg
, Sheila Vand
, Lena Hall
, Annalise Basso
, Roberto Urbina

The dystopian thriller Snowpiercer is a reboot of the 2013 film, which took place in an apocalyptic, ice-covered world. The characters live on a constantly moving train that prevents them from freezing, but the train’s class system is almost as dangerous. The series begins when Andre Layton, played by Daveed Diggs, is pulled from the Tailies (lower-class) section in order to solve a murder. Soon after, he becomes embroiled in even more mysteries surrounding the Voice of the Train Melanie Cavill, played by Jennifer Connelly, and Sean Bean’s enigmatic Mr. Wilford.

An Unexpectedly Warm Ending

After being canceled by TNT, the show was picked up by AMC for its final send-off. However, while ultimately optimistic, the ending left much open to speculation. Fans are hopeful for a spin-off, but as of now, no plans are in the works.

5

‘Sweet Tooth’ (2021)

Sweet Tooth

Release Date

June 4, 2021

Seasons

1

Originally a comic series, Sweet Tooth takes place in a world of human-animal hybrids. The hybrids came about after an event known as The Great Crumble, which also caused a viral outbreak of the H5G9 virus, also known as the Sick. The show largely focuses on Gus, a young deer hybrid, as he journeys with Tommy Jepperd (aka Big Man) and tries to learn more about his origins. Along the way, he meets other hybrids, hunters, and scientists, the latter of whom think he might be the answer to ending the Sick.

A Bittersweet Ending

Season 3 marked several departures from the comic book, introducing a major new character and ambiguously changing the fate of another. Although some fans found the ending (bitter)sweet, others were disappointed with it, and felt there were still questions left unanswered.

‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’ (2024)

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live

Release Date

February 25, 2024

The iconic zombie series The Walking Dead came to an end in 2022, but it was quickly replaced by several spin-off series. One of these, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, focused on Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira as Michonne. A single season long, the show explored what happened to Rick after Jadis found him and the lengths that Michonne went to in order to bring him home.

Will Continue to Live On

Arguably, there’s always more story to be told, but in the case of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, the story was given a satisfactory ending as opposed to being forced to endlessly shamble on. While the characters might return in other series, here, their tale felt complete, and surprisingly heartwarming.

3

‘Chucky’ (2021)

Based on the Child’s Play movies, Chucky serves as a sequel to Cult of Chucky and follows 14-year-old Jake Wheeler as he deals with bullies, his burgeoning sexuality, and a homicidal doll. Flashbacks also reveal more about Chucky’s past and how he became a serial killer. As the series progressed, viewers encountered various other Chuckys including “Good Chucky” and “The Colonel.” They also watched in horror as Chucky’s murders grew in both numbers and gore.

He Always Comes Back

Fans were devastated by the show’s cancelation, launching a #SaveChucky campaign that unfortunately failed to save the series. However, Chucky’s creator Dan Mancini has promised fans that Chucky “ALWAYS comes back,” and while the series itself may have ended, the character may soon return.

2

‘Young Sheldon’ (2017)

When The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, fans were eager for more. They got their wish in the form of Young Sheldon, a series that explored child prodigy Sheldon Cooper’s childhood. The coming-of-age sitcom was narrated by Jim Parsons, Sheldon’s original actor, and starred Iain Armitage as his younger self. Overall, the series showed the highs and lows of Sheldon’s intelligence, as well as his family and friends’ (often failed) attempts to understand him.

A Tear-Jerker Ending

Although largely comedic, the series had some upsetting episodes, and the ending, which featured an important funeral, was among the most heart-wrenching. While it answered many viewer questions, it also left a few unresolved. Fortunately, some of these might be revisited in the upcoming spin-off, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

1

‘Arcane’ (2021)

Arcane TV series Poster

Arcane

Release Date

November 6, 2021

Seasons

2

Based on the video game League of Legends (LOL), Arcane was an unexpected success back in 2021. Viewers didn’t need to know the game to enjoy the series, which focused on sisters Vi and Jinx (aka Powder), who were voiced by Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell respectively, as they were thrown onto opposite sides of a war between the “topsiders” of Piltover and the inhabitants of the undercity Zaun. As the series progressed, Hextech, Shimmer, and alternate realities all took center stage, leading to a second season that was highly desired, and practically perfect.

An Ending, but Not the End

The most expensive animated series ever, Arcane had a very specific story in mind, and back when season 2’s trailer was released, it was already known that this season would be the series’ last. Still, that doesn’t mean the story is over, as there’s still much left to explore in The League of Legends universe, including an upcoming pirate-themed sequel.
