10 R-Rated Movies With 100% Critics Score on Rotten Tomatoes

10 R-Rated Movies With 100% Critics Score on Rotten Tomatoes

Since its creation, Rotten Tomatoes has changed the way we see movies. It’s become the go-to resource for movie buffs, helping them discern which films are worth their time and money. If a movie lands a high score on Rotten Tomatoes, then a potential viewer might feel compelled to see that film in theaters. But on the flip side, if a movie gets hit with a splattered tomato and a low critics’ score — even if it’s a film that you really, really wanted to see in theaters — then you may suddenly be convinced to wait until that movie becomes available to stream or rent at home.

It’s in everyone’s best interest to get the Tomatometer (the critics’ score) as close to 100% as possible. Very few films have managed to accomplish this. It’s a very exclusive club. And even fewer of those films have an R rating, a rating that wasn’t even created until 1968. Here are ten R-rated films that managed to land a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, ranked by year of release.

10

‘Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion’ (1970)

Police procedural meets political satire in the film Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, an Italian black-humored thriller about corruption in high office. It follows an Italian police officer who kills his mistress and then tests whether the police will charge him for his crime, manipulating the investigation while planting obvious clues.

Lauded for its political commentary and psychological suspense, Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion was met with universal acclaim, which is no surprise given its perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes across 15 critics’ reviews. It claimed the Jury Prize at the 1970 Cannes Film Festival and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

9

‘Atlantic City’ (1980)

Atlantic City is an international production that came to the United States in late 1980. Despite its international roots, Atlantic City stars two famous American actors, Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon. In this romantic dramedy, a Canadian woman wishing to pursue a career in the gambling industry relocates to Atlantic City, where she becomes romantically involved with an aging gangster.

After garnering critical acclaim for its bittersweet romance and heartfelt performances, Atlantic City was nominated for “the Big Five Academy Awards”. It didn’t win any of the categories though, losing Best Picture to Chariots of Fire. But Atlantic City does beat Chariots of Fire on Rotten Tomatoes, overpowering its 84% score with that coveted 100% rating.

Fanny and Alexander is perhaps the best movie you’ve never heard of. It’s a Swedish drama and a semi-autobiographical story written and directed by legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. It follows two siblings, a brother and sister, after their father’s unexpected death during the first decade of the twentieth century, capturing close family bonds as well as familial abuse.

Regarded as Bergman’s magnum opus, it won four Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film. It holds a 100% rating out of 46 critics’ reviews. Fanny and Alexander isn’t just considered one of the greatest works of Swedish cinema; it’s considered one of the greatest films ever made.

7

‘The Terminator’ (1984)

the-terminator-1984-poster.jpg

Release Date

October 26, 1984

Runtime

107 Minutes

This one is surprising. Although The Terminator is one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made, it’s not exactly a film that you’d expect to have a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. And yet, it does. Not only that, but The Terminator garnered a 100% based on 73 critics’ reviews, which is an impressive number compared to other entries on our list. In this 1980s classic, a soldier from an apocalyptic, war-ravaged future is sent back in time to protect the mother of the future’s unborn savior from a ruthless killing machine.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s monotone robot — sporting a black leather jacket and black shades — has become one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history. The Terminator’s tremendous success launched the career of director James Cameron. It also spawned a franchise of films, including a sequel that’s widely considered to be better than the original, even though Terminator 2: Judgment Day has only a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

6

‘Rambling Rose’ (1991)

Rambling Rose is based on the 1972 novel of the same name. Set in Georgia during the Great Depression, a domestic servant develops relationships with both the father and son of the family that employs her. It stars Laura Dern and Robert Duvall in the leading roles, as well as Dern’s mother, Diane Ladd, in a supporting role. Rambling Rose received critical acclaim, particularly for its performances.

Interestingly, both Dern and Ladd were nominated for Oscars for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively. Neither of them won. However, their nominations make them the first mother-daughter duo to be nominated for Academy Awards for the same film. Rambling Rose holds a 100% rating out of 22 critics’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

5

‘Before Sunrise’ (1995)

Release Date

January 27, 1995

Runtime

101 minutes

Before Sunrise is a romantic drama that serves as the first installment in the Before trilogy, a series of romantic films starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. This first film brings two European travelers together, who forge a deep and passionate connection through meaningful conversations. Before Sunrise features a minimalistic plot, focusing mostly on monologues and extended dialogue between its characters.

And critics ate it up. Before Sunrise has a 100% rating across 50 critics reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Its two sequels, 2004’s Before Sunset and 2013’s Before Midnight, didn’t score as high as Before Sunrise. But both films still enjoyed critical acclaim, scoring a 94% and a 98% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes. The films’ director, Richard Linklater, has recently teased the idea of a fourth film in the series.

4

‘Gloria’ (2013)

There are a lot of films out there called Gloria, but only one of them has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes across an impressive 128 reviews. 2013’s Gloria is a Chilean-Spanish drama that centers on its titular character, an aging divorcee who kicks off with an intense affair with a man she meets at a disco.

Gloria received critical acclaim. Why? The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes says it best: “Marvelously directed by Sebastian Lelio and beautifully led by a powerful performance from Paulina Garcia, Gloria takes an honest, sweetly poignant look at a type of character that’s all too often neglected in Hollywood.” Sebastián Lelio directed a remake of his own movie in 2018, an English-language film called Gloria Bell, starring Julianne Moore and John Turturro in the lead roles. While it didn’t land a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Gloria Bell did achieve an impressive 90% across 207 critics’ reviews.

3

‘Mickey and the Bear’ (2019)

Set in Montana, Mickey and the Bear follows a teenage girl searching for identity and independence, as she struggles to keep her household afloat and take care of her loving yet volatile father.

This dramatic, coming-of-age story was a hit in the festival circuit, including South by Southwest, the New Hampshire Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival of Boston, and a few others. It was also a hit with critics, particularly on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a 100% rating out of 44 critics’ reviews.

2

‘Apocalypse Now: Final Cut’ (2019)

Release Date

August 15, 1979

Runtime

147 minutes

Francis Ford Coppola’s epic masterpiece, Apocalypse Now, is the definitive Vietnam War movie. It dives into the madness of America’s most notorious war, immersing you in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam while highlighting the war’s psychological horrors. It’s gritty, it’s brutal, it’s harsh. Apocalypse Now is led by notable performances, from an intense Martin Sheen, to a disturbed Marlon Brando, to a young, then-unknown Laurence Fishburne.

Over the years, Coppola has released different versions of his iconic film. In 2019, he showed Apocalypse Now: Final Cut for the film’s 40th anniversary screening at the Tribeca Film Festival. This cut is actually Coppola’s preferred version of the film. Apocalypse Now: Final Cut has an extended runtime, features updated sound and cinematography, and removes added material from previous versions. While the original release of Apocalypse Now has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, the Final Cut boasts a 100% based on 23 critics’ reviews.
